is it a fully auto transmission, or a "semi-auto"(no clutch, but you still have to shift)?
I've never heard of a Thing with a semi-auto from new, although it is possible for one to have been installed at a later date, from a semi-auto ghia or bug. A fully auto trans, like a type three, four or bus, is a whole different kettle of fish and isn't a simple interchange with a type one trans, so unless someone's done a great deal of hackwork to your car, chances are you don't have one of those.
Semi-autos aren't real receptive to increases in power, because of the flexplate and the vacuum activated shift system. It's hard to install dual carbs for example.

The automatic (or semi-automatic) was not available on the Thing. Someone must have put it in there at a later date.
