On a serious note about the dash face....I'm still undicided on the metal dash face painted the same as the car or the wood face. I like the wood veneer, probably a light mahogany but I'm leaning towards the metal dash look. Its a lot less work. My metal skills are better than my woodworking skills. And yes...you will have to fill in the holes before you apply filler. The bottom slots are small enough to go ahead and fill directly but the top ones, the extra holes in the dash face and the radio opening will have to be dealt with before applying any filler. I will probably weld in a thin piece of sheet metal across the dash face and go from there. I'm making a console for the stereo and gauges. Good luck with whatever you choose. _________________ Allen C.

I purchased from KPG&R a few years ago but have since sold the car. This is much cheaper than what KGP&R is selling it for.

I know you posted this a while ago...but I simply removed the plastic crap and bought some mahogany veneer. Once I cut the shape (used the plastic as a template) I steamed the two ends to wrap around the sides. Stuck it on with glue then cut the instrument holes from the back…as well as the glove compartment. Ten coats of varnish… and you’re done.
If you’d like a pic of mine (BTY—I’ve got extra veneer) e-mail me [email protected]. _________________ Don't need to drive fast...when your driving a work of art!

I know all these postings were back in aug. - except for the last one before mine - I did send jason hamilton a private message over a week ago but he never answered, but I ran into a retired VW salesman and he said a real wood venere dash was part of an option package that very few people ever ordered - I have also seen two real wood venere dashs ( both happened to be in '71 'verts) that both owners claimed to be original |

I did get your PM, Gary, and I'm sorry for not responding.
This is the first I've ever heard of a real wood dash being available on a new Karmann Ghia. It's not mentioned in any of my literature, or in accessories brochures. I'd like to know for sure - anyone out there have an original invoice for their car, or a "birth certificate" showing a real wood dash option? _________________ Jason Hamilton

My car has a JC Whitney wood grain plastic cover.....terrible looking. Does anyone know of anyone selling the black plastic verneer. 72 vintage. I have seen pic's of 72's with the black and I think it looks better. _________________ 72 ghia coupe w/Electric Golde slider

I stripped the remainder of the black dash face from the 73 vert I'm parting out. It is pebble-faced and I think it's rather ugly. Mahogony sounds like the way to go for a sweet interior. _________________ West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette, 319 U.S. 624 (1943)

DOH I didn't know it was "pebble" texture. That sounds horrible. _________________ 72 ghia coupe w/Electric Golde slider

hey jason hamilton - I've seen another jason post in the ghia forum - I think he works at KGPR - so if your out there, could you shed any light on this subject?? was a real wood veneer dash available as part of a seldom ordered option package from VW on new ghias? I doubt this would have been a dealer add on. |

No form of real wood was ever an option for the dash facing. |

I bought some vinyl and high temp spray adhesive at a local uhpolstery shop and replaced the black plastic crap. Was easy and only cost about $10 and and hour to do. Here is a pic of the tach I just made out of the clock but you can see the vinyl on the dash:

My 71 has that wood grain face. I used some Armourall on it and it cleaned it up. I too like the stock look. I am keeping the wood grain face as long as it will last. I think it looks good. Some of the new face and wood grain repros don't look at all like the replacements (originals) should look. At least none that I have seen.

Yes I did notice this but allowed it to continue its Zombie reincarnation as "kit" is a newbie.
For those who are not sure it's not always a good idea to resurrect old threads after a couple of years have passed since the last comment. The reason for this is that old recommendations on parts availability may not be relevant, remotely hosted pictures go missing and people who previously contributed also go missing. If you can't find anything reasonably recent after a search it's acceptable to post a new topic. _________________ John.
