As per advice here that carrying a spare fuel pump is a Good Idea, I scored one at the junkyard last week. Now I want to be sure it's going to work if it's ever needed.

The pump was taken from a rather hammered '85 van, but the pump looked to be in decent shape and had a dribble of fuel coming from it when I removed it.

Can I just stow it in the dark recesses under the bench seat and forget it? Or, would a shot of oil/grease/elixir help keep important pump innards from drying out? Someone here suggested vacuum sealing it in a seal-a-meal type bag, which I thought was pretty crafty. Any other ideas to keep it in good shape when stored?

I ran some fresh diesel fuel (or was it kerosene?) through it to clean it out and be sure it worked, capped the ends with plastic caps similar to what would be on it when new, rolled it up in a ziplock, and tucked it into an appropriate sized box.

It's been under the bench seat for three years, now.

Cheers!

I've heard ...you know how that goes ...to fill it full of mineral oil, and then store to help keep the internals of the pump up to speed
