While my engine was out for a pesky oil leak I decided to swap tranny’s for my lower mileage spare. Put a new ball in the nose cone, new gaskets and seals all around, disassembled\cleaned\lubed the clutch fork... any who, its all back in now and this tranny whines pretty loud in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. It doesn't grind or rattle just a loud gear whine, like a race car Shocked Any body else have a whiny tranny?

And it whined before or you don't know (you just knew it was low mileage?)

Never drove the other bus. The current unit in my 79 was getting uncomfortably loud, so I figured I had nothing to loose putting in the other. The new one shifts nice and is smooth, just whines. While changing the gaskets I visually inspected the internals and found nothing obviously wrong with them.

There are so many shims, feeler gauge and backlash measurements during a rebuild I'm not sure if the noise can entirely be attributed to visibly worn gears.

I agree, just wondered if gear whine is common in these transaxles.

This is a really obvious question, and judging by your post you seem to do good thorough work,,, But,,,,,How is the oil in the Tranny? Nice new clean synthetic gear oil?

Only if they are worn. Mine has 70k and it's quiet. My buddy has 134k and his is very noisy in all gears.

have a friend with a 77 tranny in a 72. The tranny set for awhile before he put it in. he changed the gear oil (which had turned the consistancy of molassis) and stuck it in. It would whine in 2nd and 3rd, so he drove it for 1k then changed the gear oil again. Once again it was real thick. He put new oil in and ran it for another 1k, the whine got quieter, but didnt go away, so he changed the oil again, now you can barely hear the whine.

Sweet, I'll keep my fingers crossed as a reman unit is not in the budget.
