I was watching Pretty In Pink last night. Molly Ringwald getting into her Pink Lowlight. Looks like a 56 or 57 because of the nondished steering wheel.

Some of those dents look like the prop department had to make the Ghia look more beat up than it was. _________________ Prosit!

If so, then they did a pretty crappy job.
When was the last time that you saw a car with ents like that yet no accompanying scratches or rust in the paint?
... and who would bother putting a new layer of paint over the exterior without first at least attempting to remove all those dents?
It doesn't make any sense either way you look at it.
It's funny, though, that I have absolutely no recollection of her character's Ghia either being a lowlight, or being so dented up.
... but then at this point in my life, I guess I'm lucky I can remember that I even saw that movie some 30+ years ago. |

On my way back from Australia/New Zealand I watched “All the Presidents Men” there is a 70’s Ghia parked in the street in an early scene of Robert Redford walking down the street. There are also a couple of overhead shots of a parking lot with lots of beetles and I think a square back, Redford is getting his car, a Volvo. |

A two-tone RHD Ghia coupe turned up in a recent PBS documentary about Uganda's notorious dictator, Idi Amin. This scene was shot in the capitol city of Kampala, sometime around the early-mid 1960s. Nice Beetle ragtop in the foreground.

OK, it's not from the silver screen but the small screen. This is Bozer staking out his boss, Oversight, in the March 15 episode of MacGyver. And when he is caught Oversight warns him never to use his own car on stakeouts.

Rule #1 of Stakeouts - Blend in with the surroundngs as much as possble.
Even in Miami, that Ghia would stand out like a Turquoise thumb with a poorly fitting trunk lid - FAIL!
BTW, T-bars, really?
I never thought I'd be saying that a stock fat chick bumper was a better alternative, but having now seen that I do believe that would be true. |

A '68 Karmann Ghia coupe makes an appearance in the 1983 film, 'The Man With Two Brains', starring Steve Martin and Kathleen Turner. In this scene, Martin's character drives by the Ghia while seeking out a body for his wife's brain which he's keeping in a jar.

My little girl was super excited to inform me that the Disney Z-o-m-b-i-e-s apparently get around in a ghia. I wasn’t able to find pics however.

On the April 4, 2019 episode of the Jeopardy game show there was a category on "Transportation". The clue was a picture of a Karmann Ghia (not a low light but a later model) with the following narrative:
"This sporty Volkswagen coupe debuted in 1955"
None of the contestants even ventured an answer. I think Alex Trebeck was a bit taken aback by the lack of a response.
Of course with the last Ghia being at least 45 years old I guess its not surprising. _________________ Ghia Owner Emeritus |

Hey, is it the young people's fault that no Social Media Influencer has yet schooled them about the virtues of the Karmann Ghia?

Almost the same shot, but with the actors in it. Mid film.

In Episode 2 of the current season of Chasing Classic cars there are multiple shots of a couple of different Ghias as Wayne Carini is in a used car lot looking for a car to take to the Concours d'Lemons. The shots of the Ghias are near the beginning of the show. _________________ Ghia Owner Emeritus |

Here's the scene that Nova's talking about ↓
Two Ghia coupes, a white one close in and a red one further back can be seen at Dodi's Auto Sales in Monterey, CA.
Dodi's is the same lot where Wayne got this beauty for the Concours a couple of years ago ↓
