I am a new square owner, only had it about a month. When we drive the car for a while and then turn it off, it continues to run a little, however it seems to only do this after longer trips. I recently posted about the frequency of needing to adjust the valves, is this a sign that it is time to do that or what? Thanks in advance for your feedback. This site is a great resource, especially for us new VW owners.

We'll need to know year of car, and if it's fuel injected or carburetted. MOST LIKELY culprit is timing just a shade too advanced.

Had the same problem with mine before the rebuild. Mechanic told me to let the clutch out while in gear after turning it off. Not quite the advice I was looking for.

Thanks for the replies. The Square is a 71' with a recently rebuilt engine with dual carbs. I am leaning towards the timing being a little too advanced. I have read about some "bentely" manuals. What are they and how do you get one?

what kind of distributor do you have? the correct timing differs depending on if you have a 009, a stock carbed distributor, etc...
