Ok so I finished sanding out my tank tonight...... Sanding the clear down to get ready for the L29 blue grey.
I have hunted down the mix for Glasurit:
VOLKSWAGEN - L29 BLUE GREY
Glasurit Line 22
Target ltr kg
Base Amount Cumulative UNIT
M26 358.3 358.3 g
M60 290.3 648.6 g
M974 39.4 687.9 g
M77 13.1 701.1 g
522-322 380.5 1081.5 g
I am not sure what we are going to do about matching the gloss but will let you guys know. |

Hi! A black tank is a replacement tank or a repainted tank, the correct color of an original tank from 10-52 until the early 1960s is L29 gray-blue, I tried tracking this code down and it is impossible to find anywhere. However, there are a couple other pieces in the car also painted the same color, such as the two piece heater connection covers under the rear seat and you can drop off a piece and have the color matched. _________________ Kimberly

PEPPE, have you had any luck coming up with a paint code or paint ID? _________________ Jerry

As far as I could tell the top picture is my untouched 57 tank painted the original color....the bottom picture is my attempt to match it. It's way too light.

What's the consensus on body color-matched fuel tanks? Most of the Convertibles I've seen have body color-matched fuel tanks, especially Iris Blue cars. |

Hard to tell from the pics, since the OG gray looks similar to the bluish gray. But I had both color matched and they are definately different.
Now, split convertibles I believe had body colored tanks. _________________ Kevin "Wiggy"

I see lots of high dollar restorations that miss this little fact. If you paint your tank gloss black you're gonna lose points when the car is judged. L41 was never a tank color. _________________ "What a fool believes he sees, no wise man has the power to reason away." Dobee, Dobee, Do |

Agree. Most splits should have had a dullish black gas tank. _________________ Kevin "Wiggy"

I'm not arguing with you guys, but if only replacement tanks are black there must be one heck of a lot of replacement tanks out there. My old 54 had a black tank and I'm 99% certain that it had never been hit or had a reason to have the tank replaced. |
