This looks same as my dash but I have a square hall for the fuel gauge. I may close it or try to do make a hall in the tank to install the fuel gauge tube. I hope any body could post some pics for the fuel tank.
By the way, what is the function for the right nob on the corner that next to the cigarete nob?
I know the left upper nob for the headlight and the right nob for the wipers, is that correct? |

I have an early 60. The dashes had a square hole located behind the dash grill. Mine had a bit cut out for a 'hotdog' dehne gauge. I have chosen not to use the gauge, and pulled the old, unrestored tank with the sender hole. My replacement tank was painted matte black. I stripped it, and had a local paint shop mix up L29. After spraying the tank, the difference is really visible. However, I can only imagine how many tanks the producer supplied to vw, and how slight variations might have led to our tanks looking quite different. I would also wonder how 50 years of little to no exposure to light would effect the pigments? In any case, in our cars the visible, taller tanks are a rare idiosyncracy, and deserving of consideration. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this thread.

Just picked up my tank from Paint. Had them match the passenger arm rest support as per this thread. Think it turned out nice although maybe too much gloss.

|
|
When I purchased my "1956" Beetle (manufactured mid September of 1955), it had the smooth walled humpback style gas tank, which I later read through other threads was unique to early 56 models produced in 55. I'm not certain if the tank with the horizontal long pressings came before or after, but I'm inclined to believe after. My smooth walled tank metal is wavy by nature of how it was manufactured, so I'm assuming the horizontal pressings came after in an attempt to add structural rigidity to the wall of the tank. I do believe that the tanks with vertical pressings came later in 1956 and remained until the end of the production of humpback style tanks.
So, to get to the point about color, my smooth walled early 56 tank was painted in the dull Bluish-Gray. At first, I thought it was primer that someone had painted over it along the way, because it was so dull, but now I believe it was original. It was difficult to get an accurate color match off the tank, so I color matched it to the armrest support and the speedometer support and heater pod covers, which all appeared to be the same shade of bluish-gray.
I'm sorry I can't supply a paint code or formula, it was matched by eye, but done spot on. |

Anyone ever come up with, or find a good modern day formula for the old L29 color?
And a question, is L29 a Glasurit code?

Not exactly the best day to ask for an exact color code right? |

So relating to this question, how did you seal the insides of these tanks?
And relating to the paint question, Should you, 1) paint, 2) powder coat, or 3) POR-15 the tank? granted my tank isn't really rusty... but it looks like everyone's doing paint. Your personal experience & input appreciated. _________________ '57 Ragtop

Just finished spraying RM Uno HD single stage in L29 Blue Gray. This is the color mixed by the local jobber off the Glasurit website in their lower tier Uno line.
Just preliminary pictures but from the color of the glove box before and after, my recollection of the gas tank before media blasting, and the result now I'd say the color and luster are almost perfect.
For anyone considering Glasurit's L29 formula...you won't be disappointed!
And yes the top of the gas tank will be painted next. _________________ -Ryan

Here's mine...sorry for the crappy pic. Way too glossy, but it's what I wanted.
Much more blue/gray than L29 |

Hey, OLD, what are the 2 items above the round hot air conduits?
And how much paint to do 1 tank do you think, a quart?
And wondering what you did prior to painting. Did you media blast it? And what did you use for primer. I was going to use a metal etching paint I got at the marine store, after I media blast it. Did you seal the inside? I was going to use the Eastwood POR 15 sealing kit they sell. Do the sealing, and then the paintwork. Or maybe I should just leave the inside untreated...

Hey Rob,
That is the turn signal flasher support and passenger armrest support inside the door. They are blue gray in 58-59 models. I bought one pint. I have about half remaining to do the top side of the tank. If I did it over again I would buy a quart just to have extra as I think I will likely use all of it to finish the items left.
I media blasted the outside of the tank. Glasurit 801-72 epoxy primer and then the color.
The inside I cleaned out with chain and muriatic acid from home depot. Sealed it with master series which is like POR 15. People go back and forth with whether you should or shouldn't seal it.
Good luck with the project! _________________ -Ryan

Nice job on your restoration. Just checked out your site. I wish I had room for a Media cabinet and compressor! Maybe in a couple of years.
Hey, on dyeing your assist straps, did you find that the original color was grey/gray? Mine are. '57 Polar Silver color car. How did the vinyl dye work on the sunbeaten straps you have?
Neat story able about the original owner too.

Lovely color, the closest so far I've seen in a new mix.
