TCP Global (http://www.tcpglobal.com) had an exact paint match from a part and it was around $85 (plus shipping).

What paint line did you use and color code?

I don't know the exact paint line but it's acrylic urethane. TCP blends their own brand paint. Here's what was on my quote and photos of the can. Sonny at TCP Global was really helpful on getting it all together.

RSP AU-B-QT
1952-60 VW CODE L29 (FUEL TANK COLOR)
TCP0104217 BLUE GRAY

RSP AU4001-HP
ACRYLIC URETHANE HARDENER HALF PINT CAN

I live in Southern California. I would have to travel to another state to get the paint by code that you all are using. I am a Jeep guy also, and the pictures in this thread are close to a Jeep color, Anvil. So here is my 1960 tank painted 2015 Jeep Wrangler Anvil. Close enough for me.....i could have lightened it up a bit with white, i guess. But....it is pretty.

We still plan to color sand and put a couple more coats on there. My boy will probably spill gas at some point, the more layers of paint the better.

I matched and sprayed my Original to the 1960 beetle gas tank color to a dupont book stock color in Nason 2k SS urethane named:

Dupont DS 174
this is also known as DUCO 73605

so if your looking for an off the shelf code in modern Dupont paint formula with no custom matching naecessay, there you have it! I hope this is helpful.
This color was also used on 60-61 chevrolet truck interior panels.

1949 to april 1951, the gas tank is painted in the car's body color.

May 1951 to August 1955 gray / blue, not black.

I repainted 5 pre 55 fueltanks for some month ago.
And to get the right color i tok my very untuched fueltank from my oval march 1953 and vent to my friend that is carpainter.

He have the latest model of color camera, soo we cleaned one untuched spot under the fueltank.

And he get an match that was one of the best result he ever had with the camera.
Then he put the camera in his computer and after 30 second it found an match.

When i brought the fueltank to him he immediately said that it is a RAL color.
But the problem with RAL colors, like all other colors, all manufacturers have shade differences.
And it´s different if you choose a water based or solution-based paint.
So you can´t just go on a color code or RAL color and think it will be exactly the same from different color manufacters.
He worked with Dupont or as the new brandname is Cromax.

Here you see the different against the black color.
The fueltank colour is blue/grey. Not black

Here is one repainted tank beside the original untuched tank.
The new painted tank above the original -53 tank.
Only half of the original tank is washed and polisched.

I’ve read the thread, but still looking for either a PPG or AXALTA paint code for L29 blue gray. BillB’s tank color from TCP Global looks dead accurate, but I understand their codes wouldn’t help anyone else using a different paint brand. (Like PPG or Axalta)

Anyone have either? Thanks.

Colour looks correct, paint finish is wrong.
Should be a semi-matt finish not a Gloss.
Look at any original car, the paint is not shiny.
People polish them over time which does change the finish.

Does anybody have a modern color match for this shade. Sorry but it does not look like the others 1956 and up with lighter blue/gray. This is the color I recall on my original '55. Thanks!

I understand. I just see that color as a darker shade. He states it is pre-1956 model year and original.

Thanks!

There are different colors depending on the year.

- 1951 april it´s painted in the same color as the body.
1951 may to 1955 July is´t dark blue-gray.
After 1955 august 6 is´t light blue-gray.

Thank you Sweden. Have you found a good modern matched color for the dark blue-gray?
Very Happy Question

I just rattle canned mine Krylon Smoke Grey. Not perfect..but a heck of a lot better than it was. Plus, tank is far from perfect so all good.
