Ok before I put my new 009 in I have a few questions about what my old one is doing. For starters it can't hold an advance to save it's life, and no it's not the dizzy clamp. The other day after work I dumped it and laid on the gas...Sick burnout, however my rpm/idle jumped to 1400rpm after!
Got home and readjusted it.
The next day on the way home from work I decided to have a little down shift fun...well after that I came to the next traffic light and my car was idling at 1900rpm!
Why is it when I beat on it a little bit it changes the idle speed?

Sounds like a broken string or sticking plates inside. Shocked
I had one doing that once and i put in a new dizzy and all was well (opened it up and there was a stretched out spring and crud all over the plates). not long later and i put in a vac. dizzy and that was better yet.
Hope this helps.

Personally, I think 009's are absolute junk. When they were still made in Germany, they were bad enough, but now their quality has a lot to be desired. It sounds like you have a mechanical advance (breaker plate) that is hanging up. Disassemble, clean, re-lube, re-assemble.

Sounds like your old 009 took a crap. Here's some options from least to best order:

1) get a new 009. There is no quality control and some of them don't fully advance and who knows how long it will last.
2) fix the old one. If it worked before it might be worth fixing.
3) get a SVDA from Aircooled.net. If you have a good vacuum port these are a good option and work well.
4) get a 019 or 010. Depending on your engine both of these are quality distributors and the 019 is for stock to mild performance while the 010 is mild to high performance.
5) get a Mallory. If you have the budget and a high performance engine, these are the best available.

Glenn I'm right there with you on the Mallory, but I can't put $500 into my IGN right now. As it is I just bought an electronic ign mod...so using it would be nice. Buying a german Bosch dizzy would be nice, however finding one in mint shape is hard to come by. I'm gonna stick the new 009 in there and hope for the best. The ORG question was posed due to being other possible issues. Right now the friggin thing idles at 1600 rpm-this is the only spot on the dizzy it runs best at. If I turn the dizzy down and snap the the gas it pops and dies out quick, rev it up slow and it works fine.
NO-the jest are not clogged...checked checked and recleaned.
When I bring the advance up it snaps clean and rev's great from low to high.
The advance in the old 009 seems to suck ass.....just does not hold.
Lets see what happens after dropping in the new 009 Confused

I generally have restored 019s and 010s in stock.

There's also one on ebay that looks pretty NOS. But it is missing the NOS brown o-ring and the distributor cap is not the old Dark Brown, but the new black plastic. Still, it looks very nice.

But I doubt it will sell for the current $50 bid.

I know you mentioned that Mallory was the best. What about MSD? Is vacuum better than mechanical? How would you run a vacuum advance with a dual carb set-up?
Just some Q's...
