How about the one that was for sale last week for $50 on the SAMBA- the one that requested information ? I found one like that at the local Wrecking yard last summer,it sat on the front of a bus for 2 months- I couldn't stand it -- the yard just gave it to me ,I figured it was a repop but different from the ones being sold now and put it on the '61 for fun. THEN I see a picture of one that looks KIND of like it in Kieths California Look VW book on the Inch pincher (on page 73) .Any ideas ? At least it's different.. Lloyd

I got 3, NOS, rear, EMPI ones, with the EMPI globe attached via "pal nuts" instead of being part of the cast frame. I can't get photos because it is all packed away.
You still can find Econo and Economotors frames down here from time to time, but they are getting hard to find. I know where is a stash of 35-40 of them, but the guy knows what they are worth, and isn't inclined to sell them. Another guy right down the street from the plate frames has probably 20 sets of NOS 88mm slipper skirts....$1,750.00 a SET...ouch.

I am still kicking myself for not getting an economotors plate frame when I had a chance. it was a little more special though, because it had an original dealers license plate from econo motors. it was a blue plate with the number 975. I have a picture of it somewhere around here. Glenn Miller had it. he said that he sold it to someone in florida.

DaveM

Just out of interest i have got an ECONO frame just like the top one in your pic. highly polished, detailed in black, with a little bit of coral red coming through in places.

How can you tell if they are real?

The easiest way to tell if they are real is that the real ones in that style were made by atlas in Los Angeles. It should be stamped on the back. I've owned and sold many of those style frames and I've never seen one with red paint on it unless someone painted it themselves. They come only in blue background white lettering. I usually sell them anywhere from $200 up to $700 depending on which style frame it is and of course the condition. Post a picture I'd like to see it. You can check the gallery under restojohnny to compare your frames to mine if ya want.

From reading all the posts on this thread, isn't that one a repro? It has no "ears" as Thornton pointed out.
