I dont't know if any of you guys go to Azusa canyon, but I want to take my bug there becuase all my buddys go there with their 4x4's. I recently purchased a 66 bug and I'm dropping a 2250 type 4 in it. I am concerned about the streams that are there. They can be 1 to 1 1/2' deep. I'm new to bugs, is there a cheap way to get some more ground clearance without using the torsion bars? I dont know. Do anyone have any suggestions? Thanks. |

I suggest you be careful of all the drunk drivers in their 4x4's. I have been there and it wasn't pretty... a lot of "out of control" drinking going on in that canyon. Don't get me wrong, I love pounding a few like the next guy, but there were a lot of guys way out of control when I was there. _________________ "It's not complicated, it's just expensive!"

My wife and I used to cross lots of streams. 1 to 1.5 feet is no problem. I've crossed many times much deeper than that. One time too deep. The water line came to the top of the carburator. Needless to say I had to kill the engine to avoid hydrolock After it was pulled out and the crankcase flushed with about three fills of oil it ran just fine.
Heres one of my wife and her Baja about 1982 that I scanned from an old photo. (no digital cameras back then)
Note the custom head lights and the truck clearance lights for signals? _________________ My Albums

Ok great. Thanks. I wasnt sure if it would be ok to go that deep. Thanks for the quick replies. Anything i should do to the engine to keep it ok when going through water? I was thinking about putting snorkels on the dual carbs. |

The last time I went through a creek, my problem was that I got the ignition system wet. The motor died when I blasted through this stream - it was pretty deep and I drove through pretty fast, so water went everywhere. I don't have any extra waterproofing on the ignition system except a factory type dust shield inside the distributor. Actually the distributor stayed dry under the cap, it was the water that coated the plug wires elsewhere that killed it. After a minute of dripping off it started up again...

Waterproof the distributor, ect, and 1-1.5 ft. isn't that much of a problem. If you don't blast it, you shouldn't have to worry about H20 in the ignition system, but there's just something about turning your VW into a skipping stone... |

That's in Medicine Bow National Forest, in the mountains west of Wheatland, WY. Bear Creek. That was during spring runoff, and was fairly deep, most of the year this has little to no water in it. Contrast this picture taken a few months later at the same spot:

Ive been to azusa canyon 2 times and could not get across the main crossing. The water was half way up the pedal cluster and I had to stop and backup. That was several years ago. You might make it across in the summer? not sure.
I tried to go across the rocky part and almost got stuck, People thought I was crazy because the rocks were so huge I looked like a rock crawler and barely made it out.
The last time I tried to go there, a couple years ago the rangers would not let me in and said they dont let bugs in unless they are registered as green sticker or dual on/off road. |

All right!! I was afraid I was the only VW offroader in Wyoming.
I'm still finding areas to ride in. We'll have to hook up sometime.
Any other cool areas?

Other than the back roads in the hills southwest of town here in Douglas, as in that picture, I don't go in the backcountry that much any more. When I lived down in Fort Collins, I used to go up into the foothills west of town or out onto the Pawnee National Grasslands a lot. But as for other places around Wyoming I've not done much.

If you ever come down into the Denver area this is where I'll be going all summer. All kinds of stuff to get into.

I understand Andy. Lots of space here but not much offroadin'.
I use to play up Poudre and Rist canyon, and of course we try to go to Walden once a year for a sand fix.
I'll keep lookin',
