Don't you hate it when it's too cold to work on your bug, there's no heater so it's too cold to drive, and you have ordinances that prevent you from keeping it outside? If I could just find a way to get the frost off the windshield while driving I may have kept it out. Of course, I have 5 cars and in winter you can't park in the streets on certain days so moving them all would be a pain. I really had to work to pack it all in but I still have room for my new Camry. Well, here's to warmer weather in the spring!

A red Bug with a ladder.
Is that a Fire Fighting vehicle?
Oh, and to cure your foggy windsheild problem. Leave the window open1! Its a sure way to vent the air to defrog the windsheild. Make sure you have your handy ice scraper, ready to take the ice off the windsheild too while your driving 55. |

Mine's away for the winter. Road salt and sand really beats up a vehicle in the North East.

Rebecca, It looks like you squeezed into a garage, so it may not be as bad as you think.
You can get a propane heater @ Home Depot or someplace similar. Another $30-$40 gets you the big propaned bottle, filled. Refills cost about $17-$20.
That's how I heat my garage so I can work during the winter. I have to refill once or twice per winter, depending on how much time I spend in the garage.
BTW, I think I remember you saying you lived in Chicago, and now you're in Iowa. The Cedar Rapids area? Most my local relatives moved to the CR area this year. What is it about Iowa? _________________ Everything known to man has been written.

Yes, there's a ladder, lawnmower, shovels, and a box of paint among other things on it. Since my first order of business is new hood, decklid, and fenders in the spring (and aprons and interior) I didn't see there being any harm done. I just plan on stocking up on parts through the winter then tackle it in the spring. _________________ Gone Fishin' |

Here's one of my toys, all set for his long winter's nap. I don't cover him, as I usually wait until very late to put him away, and it's too cold to wash & wax....I just make sure to do a real thorough cleaning job in the spring.

Sta-Bil is a regular part of his pre-storage diet. I also support the buggy on jack stands to prevent flat-spotting the tires, as I just bought them this past spring. The stands are under the trailing arms & axle tubes, so the suspension is not fully extended while it's up there.
Fabric softener sheets allegedly help keep your interior 'critter free' almost as good as moth balls....and they smell a lot better. I use them. _________________ Organized people are just too lazy to look for stuff

Even if you start it periodically, fuel stabilizer is a good thing; it helps keep the gas fresh, which is good because you won't use much at all just starting it every now and then.
As my garage is not constantly heated(I keep the duct shut off unless I plan on being out there for longer than an hour), I store the battery completely out of the car. If the battery were to bulge/burst/leak, it could cause all kinds of hell in the interior & to the fiberglass body. Better safe than sorry. _________________ Organized people are just too lazy to look for stuff

Glad to help. Look closely at the directions when you get it; I think one bottle works on about 20 or 25 gallons, so you don't need to use it all at once. I bought my first bottle before last winter, and used the rest of it this season in the Manx(and a little in the lawnmower too). _________________ Organized people are just too lazy to look for stuff

4oz of Sta-Bil treats 10 gallons of gas. _________________ Glenn

How did you fit that in there like that, wheel skates?
Mine is resting in the garage for the season, driving in the salt kinda defeats the purpose of buying a clean California car. The '65 will hopefully be the sacraficial lamb to cure my no-VW winter blues, it's getting driven when it's back together Who needs heat when you have long underwear, fleece, sweaters, big socks, a fleece VW hat, gloves, and some blankets. _________________ '69 Beetle, '69 Beetle Convertible |

All this time I thought it was the lawnmower that would most people would gripe about. You can see it behind the ladder here. I just needed the room for my new car, I swear.

Wheel skates are the secret to tucking the car into that corner, although he is on stands now(the skates are to help me maneuver my Beetle around the garage over the winter, while I work on it).

Wait, you can use a garage to park cars that you use every day??? I get a lot of strange looks explaining to people why I still park outside even after the new 3 car garage was finished... _________________ <---Air Cooled Search & Rescue Team - STICKERS & T-shirts for sale!

My neighbors probably think it's strange that my "new" car is in the driveway while the VW is in the garage for the winter. But I'd rather scrape windows than risk the health and well-being of the squareback. |
