I changed my oil today after about 3k miles, and found a lot of gunk on the bottom plate . It had a clay like feel to it and was gray/metallic looking. My engine runs great, but I'm a little worried.

What's a normal amount of sludge? I really want to get a pump with an oil filter on it. Any suggested types?

Thanks,

Jos

Does it look like this?

When I split the case I found both exhaust lobes on the cam almost round and the lifters badly pitted.

You might have a major problem.

Could also be water that has collected in the crankcase due to the engine not gettting hot enough to remove the water from the system.

Longer drives and a properly operating thermostat helps get rid of it.

That's metal.

Condensation is a cream colored mayonnaise like buildup usually on the inside of the oil fill.

Rolling Eyes Last time i saw a oil drain plate look like that was on my very own race engine a day before a big race when i changed my oil, then on race day a rod bearing ended up spining. So, i think if you see that kind of sludge.... Its defitnitly time to split your case before its too late. Sad

Dang! It wasn't quite that bad. On mine the sunken in part of the plate was filled flush (not a mountain like in the pic), and the color was a lot more sooty -- pretty much black until I scraped it with my finger. I am guilty of driving my car on cold mornings for short drives without the thermostat installed Sad . I found out someone removed it when I replaced my generator...

I've been thinking about doing a power upgrade anyway. It's just tough to park my only car...

Anybody know anything about his guy on ebay?

All right,

I guess his stuff is too cheap to be true.

Thanks for the heads up.

I've found that you generally get what you pay for.
