When you say "Check" do you mean if its operational or the charging capacity?
For operation, a standard volt meter or a 12 or 6 volt drop light depending on your generator and spin it with your hand.
For charging capacity your better off taking to local auto parts where they can check on machine. _________________ Jesse

disconnect generator, take belt off, ground the case, and put 12v on the field terminal. A good generator will spin just like a motor. If it does, the generator is good,if it doesn't,it ain't. _________________ if it has wheels or tits,it will make your life difficult!!

The terminal marked D+ is the output, the terminal marked DF is field. _________________ if it has wheels or tits,it will make your life difficult!!

Mine spun clockwise (same as normal rotation) when I polarized it.

Probably most accurate test of generator AND regulator...
Generator/Regulator Test!
Disconnect all wires from Generator. (tag them so you get them back right)
Connect a test light ( 6 or 12 volt what ever is appropriate) on generator to the "D+" terminal ... Ground other side of light.
Ground "DF" or "Field" on generator.
Start engine... If light comes on and brightness increases as engine rpm comes up your REGULATOR is bad ( generator works ) Caution over revving engine to fast will cause light to burn out.
IF light stays dark ( does not light ) , check test setup again to be sure its right... If you rev engine up and light still does not light GENERATOR is bad.
People with experience using a VOLT-OHM meter could use the meter instead of light... look for VOLTAGE increase..
