Howdy,
Does anyone know offhand if the ring and pinion for a 75 tranny is a higher ratio than the 79 unit? I have a chance to by a 75 bus with a reman tranny in it and would love to loose about 5mph on my top end in the 79.
Thanks

jberger,

it looks like you have to have the serial number of the tranny to now for sure. almost certainly you will have the taller 4th, but it looks like there were 75-75 gearesets that had the tall R&P also. i checked here:

http://sandlizrd.baja.com/gears.htm

i don't have a great deal of expertise when it comes to transaxles. when i have had a question like in the past i have gone to shoptalkforums and posted in the transaxle forum, where there are some real experts who can help.

The '75 ratio is 4.86:1 as opposed to 4.57:1 for the '76 up. If your transaxle has not been rebuilt, it will be in the "pyramid" 5 rib case, as opposed to the smooth 6 ribs of the 091. As originally sold, the freeway rpms in 4th gear between the '75 versus the '76 up, was actually taller in '75. The reason for this was the 4th gear ratio in '75 was .82 versus .89 in the '76 up.

I am curious about what you are seeking here. Volkswagen kept the overall 4th gear ratio extremely consistent from 1975 right through 1989 even with the development of the wasserboxer. The change in r&p's had its most noticeable effect on the lower three gears. What is the torque/horsepower of your current engine?

Bone stock rebuild 79 California model. When I added the high top my mph at a given pedal input dropped about 5 mph. So now on the high way instead of cruising at 60-65 it likes 55-60. I would like to restore the rpms to the sweet spot at the lower speed.
