Does anyone from South Africa, Australia or New Zealand have any experience with ordering these as we received Beetle and Kombis in kits for tax purposes in the 50's, 60's and 70's.
I can't see how Ghias would have worked like this as the bodies were built by hand and I can't see how they would have built them from kits.

I ordered and received a birth certificate for mine quite some time ago.

Ghias came into Australia almost fully built and not CKDs but with some assembly required. To comply with local content protectionism, it was mainly electrical things were added in the country. Things like headlights, relays blinkers etc.

I'm just in the middle of reading a book called 50 years of VW in New Zealand by Philip Coyle, there is very little mention of Ghias but a whole heap about CKDs and the same protectionist rules as Australia, I believe NZ started importing kits from Australia as you were doing about 65% local production of parts but we only hit about 40% so we got parts from the West Island.
So with what you said about the birth cert for your Sputnick I may go ahead, I was just worried about wasting my $'s on a piece of paper saying mine was a kit to be specced in New Zealand.

Dean,
I'm pretty sure you'll be satisfied. If you look at the first page of this thread there's a post concerning an Australian Ghia and the guy writes about a heap of good information about his car. He sounds really happy about the result.

I'd have to say that NZ Ghias did arrive via VWoA from Melbourne. We all seem to be very much 1960/61 cars in this part of the world. I ordered my certificate from the Automuseum and received a great product. Apart from the obvious nonsense about M 009 in 1961 meaning "Automatic Gearbox" and the usual "cannot be identified" here it is...

The Mcode M009 up chassis No. 146 1 021 300 is the Yellow taillights for Australia and Italia.
No information on the M008, but already view on birth certificate only for RHD models

WOO HOO. My BC finally came last night. It came in a big white from VW Germany, my wife said I got a calendar in the mail...LOL. Opened it up and inside was a nice white folder with both certs and a letter. The letter stated that my engine was not the production engine but I already knew that. I'll post it later when I get home.

So happy.

Are these things still 80 usd? I tried to navigate their website but I can't read german too well, although I tried to learn it, I got far enough to send them an email. I don't know if I sent it to the right section I sent it to the "classic" part I thought one was a history team, but I thought classic would be a safe bet. I just read however that they don't respond to emails though.

I think I might like to order myself one for Christmas, although from reading on here it won't arive until May or June Confused So do they take cash? Or does it still have to be card? If any one knowS.

It's 50 Euro, about 62 bucks. They take your credit card and they do charge it immediately. I ordered mine this past May and it finally arrived. I scanned the second two in b/w because my scanner was freaking out in color mode. Shocked The hologram strip is nice though.

Hi Jared

Our cars are close cousins, if not brothers. Mine is 148 932 573, built on 5 June 1968 and left the factory on 12 June 1968 for Yokohama, Japan. RHD of course. Like yours, white wall tyres. My special equipment extras included hazard waring system (a real devil to re-wire!), dashboard padding, light for dual braking system (found the parts, now to fit them), reversing lights and heated rear window.

What I can't find is a switch for the heated rear window.

Ha... that's awesome. I thought there was a reason I was following your resto so much. Very Happy That's cool to hear, I hope mine comes out as well as yours.

What was hard about the hazard wiring, mine has it too.

Question for you - are the three pages you have pictured in your post all part of the same "certificate" that they offer for 50 euros?

I guess I don't understand exactly what information the optional "data sheet" that they offer for 35 euros (or an additional 25 euros if purchased with a "certificate") would include.

If I understand correctly what they are describing, it simply sounds like the "data sheet" would include general information about that particular model for the given year.
I would think that that kind of general information should be readily available for free on the Interwebs.
