I just ordered the birth certificate for my 56 Ghia...Hope it comes through so I can check for any optional equipment, and the date. I know it's a Euro (has a sticker on the winshield for California emmissions, the German plates originally issued to the car and KM speedo). My car is in original black paint, original interior, and I HOPE has the original motor. The chasis is a 138 and the motor is a 166....So I believe it to be late July or early August production.

Hi Shaggy.
VIN 138???? would be build in the last week of December 1956
1384804 was build on 27 dec 1956
1388297 was build on 29 dec 1956
Engine 166???? is likely to be original for that car.
Please show us some pictures and I also hope you will join the KG lowlight registry as well.
Regards

Original paint, car was primered by my dad (due to a small crease on the driver's side rear fender, which needed very light body work)before I purchased the car this year, for $850 and the stock motor out of my 68 Notch. Oh yeah, The car also came with NOS Euro and American style tail light assemblies, as well as all the 36hp tin NOS, and boxes of NOS parts (he had a parts store and resto shop when I was a kid in the 80's) for that price. THANKS DAD! _________________ -Shaggy

Well, I got my birth certificate. Ordered Dec. 6th, and recieved on January 14th. I used a sample letter from the first page or 2 of this thread (THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THE SAMPLE LETTERS, THAT HELPED OUT ALOT, AND I APPRECIATE IT).
On a seperate sheet, they confirmed that I do have the original engine.
Color: L 41 Tukan Black
Built on: Dec. 22nd, 1956
Left factory on: Dec. 27th 1956
Country of destination: Dortmund, Germany
Options: M 128 white wall tires, M 951 exterior rear view mirror
*Upholstery material Blue / Blue Grey
I hope that they continue to offer this service for a very long time. I have a birth certificate for my 59 ragtop Bug, and now for my Ghia. _________________ -Shaggy

I ordered a birth certificate on 3/2/09 using the form on the AutoMuseum's website (I translated the page with the Babelfish translation tool). It arrived on Saturday, 3/21/09, much sooner than I expected! My card was charged $45.42.
The certificate confirms that the original color of our 1962 coupe was blue, Pacific Blue (L 398) with a Blue White (L289) roof. It was painted red at some point, but was light blue when we got it. Thankfully someone else passed on it because he thought it was originally red and didn't want a Ghia that wasn't the original color. Unfortunately, we don't have the original turquoise with leatherette ice blue interior.
It states the car was built on November 23,1961 and left the factory November 28, 1961. Country of destination: USA. |

There is a language option now available. Click on the small flag icon near the top of the page to jump between German and English.
Much more convenient. |

Hi, I have Karmann Ghia and the documents say its a 1975, but I know its not, I has a metal dash with the oval ash tray. I think its a 1960-61. Because I'm not sure on the model, I've been ordering parts off Samba and then they don't fit. How do I know exactly what model my car is. |

I just got this reply from the VW museum about records for my '69 Ghia 'vert:
Dear Mr. McClelland,
Thank you for your order.
In principle the Stiftung AutoMuseum Volkswagen is pleased to research the data of your old Volkswagen from the vehicle data base and to draw up a birth certificate.
However, we are not able to research the data of your Volkswagen because the micro fish regarding the chassis number of your car is crumbling and illegible.
We ask for your understanding.
The amount (35 €) we'll transfer back to your credit card account the next days.
Yours sincerely,
Mrs
Heike Fendler

Okay so, I ordered my Fahrzeug-Identitäts-Urkunde or "Vehicle Identity Document" online on August 14th - it was signed and mailed out on Sept 2nd and I received it today - 12. September 2009
______________Model:____143, VW 1500 Karmann Ghia Coupé
_____________Engine:____H: 44 DIN-PS, 1.5 liter
____________Colour :__*__L 554 Cherry Red
____________Built On:____25 November 1966
______Left Factory On:____30 November 1966
Country of Destination:____Los Angeles, USA
______Extras/Options:____M 002 / 335 US-equipment
______Extras/Options:____M 128 White wall tires
______Extras/Options:____M 759 cannot be identified
________________________* Upholstery leatherette Black
I think it's pretty cool to know the original makeup of my car, and especially its destination; me being a Los Angeles native an' all - it's kinda like me finding my bucket-o-bolts soul mate!
It came with a letter stating that my noted engine number did not fit my VIN, as well as a bulleted breakdown of the M 355 US equipment code.
Pretty cool stuff to know! _________________ Confusion --- will be my epitaph! |
