Hello,

I have a friend with an early baywindow, a T2A. We have noticed that the rear wheels are not inline with each other, the off-set between the two appears to be larger than 1 inch, which obviously indicates something is terribly wrong.
We always suspected the car was involved in a severe rear collision which might have shifted the torsion bar housings, however, recently the bus was taken to a chassis alignment place and they confirmed that the torsion bars housings are straight.

So we were thinking that maybe one of the spring plates might have been swapped with one from another model and this might cause the difference between the position of the wheels.

So my question is: are the rear spring arms (spring plates) different from one model to another ( T2A, AB and B? )
is so, con someone show me how to correctly identify them?

Thanks in advance.

Perhaps you could explain what the A, B, and AB are supposed to designate? I've never encountered such notation before.

From wikipedia:

Models before 1971 are often called the T2a (or "Early Bay"), while models after 1972 are called the T2b (or "Late Bay").

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_Type_2

And a T2ab is a transitional model which appeared on the european market featuring both early and late model elements.

Thanks and have a great day Very Happy

On the late bays at least the holes in the swing arms are slotted so there is about 10mm of adjustment fore and aft in the position of the axle. Setting each side at the extremes should get you about 20mm of relative adjustment.

If the bus went to a chassis alignment shop and they confirmed the bars were straight did they happen to measure the distance between the torsion tube and the bearing housing on each side or is this just an observation of offset? The alignment shop should of been able to verify the camber, toe and that the rear was tracking correctly.

This. Move the rearmost side forward and the most forward side rearward and that should get you in range. The 1970 I have in the shop is also like this with slots. I am pretty sure these slots existed from beginning of production.

Find another alignment shop if you're describing your toe adjustment being off. The plates are slotted to allow for setting both the toe adjustment and the tracking of the bus.

Unless you're speaking of one of the rear wheels leaning in at the top which would be the camber.

No, i am talking about toe-in.
So the main conclusion is that the spring arms should be similar from the beginning to the end of the baywindow bus production run?

rear toe and camber is adjustable on all the bays. Have you looked at the page in Bentley to be sure you and the shop know how to change things? Frankly most modern shops won't take the time to get things like that right. Find out who services old buses where you live then call them and ask where they send their VW's for alignments.

‘71+ have a slot for the assembled metal brake line to guide through, while -70 had a hole that the brake line must disconnect to pass through.

You need to have the alignment settings and adjustment procedures from Bentley with you when you go to an alignment shop. They often wont have the info in their system but can work with numbers and directions you provide them.

No, they are not all the same. There's part #'s 211-511-205 B, D, and (according to some) E versions.
The rear end acquired a slot, instead of just a hole, for the brake line. Some say that happend in '72
models with the D version, but my '71 has the slot and there's no reason to believe it's not original.
The splines that mesh with the torsion bars changed from 48 to 52 or 54 splines, depending on who
you believe. My VW parts book says -501B up thru '71, and -501D thereafter.
