And my case and heads are supposedly trash. I already knew the pistons were burnt from when I took it apart to take to the shop. (Heads were loose when we bought the car)

Should I just say the hell with it and get a longblock (which I really don't have the money for), or a rebuild kit and a used case? 74 Standard Beetle.

Thanks,

Scott

If your already pressed for money, i would just buy a longblock. It would be cheaper and quicker than buying the components seperately and having machine work done and then assemblying them. Is your mechanic competent? if you question it take it to another shop and have them check it out it wont hurt anything

Just got new info on my mechanic. Gonna go get my case, heads, and crankshaft back tomorrow and hope it's not as bad as he told me.

Thanks for the response auslander!

Thanks for the replies folks.

Went and got my engine parts back today. The guy has a longblock 1600DP(actually turnkey) out of a later model Beetle (AE# on the case) that I can buy for $450. All cooling tin, muffler, heater boxes(in rough shape), etc. included. Not sure how many miles are on it, but supposedly runs fine.
What do you think?

auslander, you have a PM.

What have you found out about your parts you got back or what still good. Is the guy going to offer any sort of warranty with the motor? If your in desperate need of having a running car i would take it but offer him all the parts off of your motor to get some money taken off the price, i say that because your buying a mystery motor when you can get a long block for about $550 with a warranty with 0 miles

550 bucks new w/ warranty? Where do I find one of those? I would much rather spend an extra few bucks (even though I can't afford it) and have a reliable engine than take a chance on a used one that is questionable. I have a feeling my Visa card is gonna melt before this is over!

The longblocks I've found have been in the 1000-1800 range.

Thanks again aus.

I called him, that's probably what I'm gonna do at this point. Gotta get it back running pretty quick, my Ranger's gonna give it up any minute now.
260,000 miles, stolen and recovered last year (painted).

Besides that, my wife wants to drive the Beetle we bought "her" Wink
