In the movie "The Mechanic" (1972), veteran assassin (aka hit man, mechanic) Arthur Bishop (Charles Bronson) teaches Steve McKenna (Jan-Michael Vincent) the skills of his profession. In the opening credits when Bishop walks to his dive hotel room for observing his target, there is an early 1960's Squareback/Station Wagon in the Los Angeles, California parking lot. |

In the humorous movie "Trafic" (1971; title correctly spelled with one "f") by French filmmaker Jacques Tati, many vehicles are involved in small accidents which take place in the Netherlands. A white early Squareback drives by in the background.

I first searched this thread for various ways to spell the "CHiPs" TV show from the 1970's and surprisingly came up with no previous postings with Type 3. The show ran from 1977 thru 1983 and featured 2 California Highway Patrol officers Frank "Ponch" Poncharello and Jon Baker (Erik Estrada, Larry Wilcox) riding their Kawasaki motorcycles in the Los Angeles area. Many VWs seen in background or driving past on the road or freeways. In season 1 episode 17 "Hitch-Hiking Hitch", 1978 a large blue truck that lost its brakes is coming up quickly on an orange late Squareback.
Truck driven by veteran stunt driver Carey Loftin, who is seen briefly driving Herbie the Love Bug when Herb hits the log in the road and Peter Thorndyke is catapulted into the trunk. No collision between the truck and the S'back. The CHiPs officers come up to the truck to assist.

"The Bionic Woman" TV show from the late 1970's, starring Lindsay Wagner as the Bionic Woman Jaime Sommers. Orange late Squareback seen in "Biofeedback" season 2 episode 12, 1977. Parked in the "German village" set, likely same car as in "Motorcycle Boogie" which I posted in Nov. 2020 here. Sommers was passenger in this Citroen DS19. |

In the popular Clint Eastwood movie "Every Which Way but Loose" (1978), Philo Beddoe (Eastwood) is driving his 1955 Chevy Pickup and comes up to a pale yellow late Squareback.
Front of a dark blue Beetle in parking lot seen just in front of the Pickup's windshield. |

Movie "Capricorn 1" (1977) has a segment with investigative journalist Robert Caulfield (Elliott Gould) trying to control his blue '65 Ford Mustang, filmed in Long Beach, California. Caulfield has been pursuing clues that a 3-man space mission to Mars has been called off moments before launch. His Mustang was tampered with to disable the brakes, ignition and throttle. As the car picks up speed, he manages to avoid traffic. Many VWs are in background including this late Squareback. Pale color could be Shantung Yellow. |

Movie "Car Wash" (1976) filmed at the "Dee-Lux" (Robert Taylor's) Car Wash - 610 South Rampart Boulevard at West 6th Street - Los Angeles, California. Many VWs seen in the background, including this white '68/'69 Squareback across the street.

Popular TV show "Starsky and Hutch" season 1 episode 17 from 1976 named "Silence". Police detectives Ken Hutchinson ("Hutch", David Soul; on left) and Dave Starsky (Paul Michael Glaser) are in a Los Angeles, California hobby shop pursuing a suspect. A white '66 or '67 Squareback is parked across the street, reflected in the shop's window.
Los Angeles, California filmed TV show "Adam-12" episode named "Log 152: A Dead Cop Can't Help Anyone" S1E22, 1969 has an early Squareback (no headrests nor reverse lights = 1966) behind Ofr. Pete Malloy (Martin Milner). |

The first couple of seasons of Adam 12 had a lot of early type 3s in it. It wasn't until the series got toward the final episodes that type 3s started becoming fewer and fewer (less than 3 per show). I only mention it, as I watch it during dinner time on "ME TV"@ 5pmeastern time.
I really enjoy watching the earlier episodes, due to all of the early cars from my childhood being shown in the background, and not just the type 3s. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Another thing to notice in the Adam-12 reruns is how AWFUL the smog was back then in LA. This is how I remember it growing up... a rare, windy day was the only time you could see the mountains!
We take it granted today but the difference closed-loop EFI and cats have made is astounding... 99% reductions. Despite the population doubling in the region, smog is 10X better than it was in the early '70s.
In that show, that wasn't fog folks, that was SMOG! |

I remember the rare days when my grandfather would make a point to mention when he could see the mountains from his house in Long Beach back in the early 80's. |

Popular TV show "Emergency!" was filmed in the Los Angeles, California area in the 1970s, thereby having occasional Type 3 in the background. Green Squareback parked across street from the Station 51 rescue truck. "Understanding", season 3 episode 13, 1973.
Orange Squareback in "Captain Hook" S6E8 1976. Parked in front of a body shop. Show star Station 51 paramedic John Gage (Randolph Mantooth) is on right in blue shirt, walking away. IMDB lists the location as 743 Foothill Blvd, La Canada Flintridge. IMDB also mentions that the yellow hotrod seen in the bodyshop is the very same famous one driven by John Milner (Paul Le Mat) in movie "American Graffiti" from 1973.
Red late Squareback or Fastback behind John Gage. "Trainee" S2E8, 1972. |

Dark green (Deep Sea Green?) early Squareback with silver painted wheels in movie "Gator" (1976). This was at an independant VW repair shop across the street from a bar where the Lincoln Continental was heading. Guy driving it out of the sunroof is actor William Engesser, who was 7'3" tall! |

Nobody has posted here in over a month...
On the small screen:
TV show Adam-12, "Wednesday Warrior" season 4 episode 24 (1972). Los Angeles, California based Police Officer Pete Malloy (Martin Milner) apprehends a suspect. Ivory early Fastback parked across the street.
Popular British TV show "The Saint" from 1962 - 1969, starring Roger Moore as Simon Templar. He travels to countries around the world to help honest people get out of trouble. In "To kill a Saint" S5E19 (1967), set in Paris, France is the left edge of a parked Squareback.
YouTube video of late Oct. 2021 from "Vice Grip Garage" has host Derek Bieri going to a "private honey hole junkyard" in Utah. Numerous VWs seen, including a '68/'69 Type 3. I already posted the blue Bay Window bus in that forum's movie/TV thread.
TV movie "The Tribe" (aka "Tribes", 1970) starring Jan-Michael Vincent has a red early Squareback parked. Since he was joining the Marine Corps at their training center, the shots are likely from nearby San Diego, California. |

Movie "The Killer Elite" (1975) filmed in the San Francisco, California area. Red late Squareback parked, seen thru Mac's taxi windshield.
Front of a parked blue '66 or '67 Fastback seen behind Jerome Miller (Bo Hopkins). Fraction of second later you can see the sloping roof so that it's not a Squareback.
Beige late Type 3 in background, with George Hansen (middle; Robert Duvall) and Mike Locken (right, James Caan).
Red late Squareback on bridge. |

I posted these on the Ghia Forum a few days ago. Type 34 Ghia on TV show "Cannon", "Missing at EL307" season 4 episode 18, 1975. Private detective Frank Cannon (William Conrad) parks his big Lincoln Continental Mark IV behind it at the client's apartment, then looks out the window to observe a guy in the green Ford sedan parked across the street who seems to be watching him. Filmed in the Los Angeles, California area.
That brown wagon is not a VW but a late '60's Datsun 411.
