VW Fastback premier at Frankfurt Auto Show, 1965. German TV "newsreel" showing the premier of the Fastback which started as model year 1966. The IAA (German for international auto show) traditionally takes place in September. Host interviewed VW's head of Sales as well as head of Technical Service. Courtyard sequence shows how the Fasty can park in small spaces, has a fine 2-toned Squareback, and a base Notchback.

Red early Squareback, YouTube video "LA 1960s 405 & Sepulveda Part 2". Sepulveda Blvd runs north-south in Southern California, and at this section is parallel to/west of the 405 freeway north of Santa Monica just south of the Sepulveda Pass tunnel. It's noteworthy because all traffic is heading southbound and using the northbound lanes. This shot happens to also be found in the movie "Sex and the Single Girl" (1964).

Saw one or two in a shot from All the President's Men. There was a parking lot shot from afar and you can see a few 3's and a beetle or two.

Alos, in Purple Rain movie Prince is headed home to have it out with his father and there is an orange one on the street.

The War between Men and Women, 1972. Filmed in New York City, starring Jack Lemmon. Lemmon (Peter Wilson) has terrible eyesight and loses his glasses. A beige late '60's Squareback passes by on the street, giving him a multiple distorted image.

Brian, here's one from episode ""The Deep Blue Sleep", 1975 season 2 episode 5. The light blue Squareback is first seen from Rockford's vantage point parked across the street from the guy he's following. You can see the headrests, making it a '68/'69.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Then you see his view through binoculars. Guest star Robert Webber is walking from his gold Lincoln Continental.

Red Notchbacks in a "stock car" race in the really lousy German movie "Return of Superbug" (1979). Main "character", the yellow ~ '68 Beetle named DuDu (German license plate letters DU for the city of Duisburg) is chased by antagonists in a black Cadillac and stumbles into a "stock car" dirt track race.

German movie "Der Tote bin ich" (I am the dead one), 1979. "K" license plate city code is Koeln (Cologne).

British miniseries "Smiley's People" (1982) were 6 episodes starring Sir Alec Guinness as former/retired spymaster George Smiley. I was tipped off to a Fridolin (Type 147) by "&Dan" from 2010 and just now skimmed through 5 of the 6 episodes to catch some VWs including this Notchback. Filmed in Thun (south of Bern) Switzerland.

German movie "Zur Sache, Schaetzchen" (get to it, my dear) 1968.

Ivory/green German police ("Polizei") late 1960's Notchback, movie "The Reader" (2008). This scene is set in 1966. Appears as though there are no reverse lights, making it as late as a '66.
