TV show "The Newlywed Game"- no car shown, but described: On a rare day when I was home during the week instead of in grade school, it was probably in 1968; I watched this show. Host Bob Eubanks posed a question to the wives- "How many carburetors does your car have?" Each of the 4 wives look perplexed as to what that is, and mentioned either "1" or an even number like 4 or 8. Husbands come back out of their isolation room. One husband answered "none". Mr. Eubanks asked shockingly- how can your car have no carburetors?! Husband proudly says something like "We have a new Volkswagen Squareback which has fuel injection- it does not use a carburetor!".
I already knew about fuel injection at that age because my dad had a '68 S'back as a company car; I think it was the first one after a '68 Beetle. He told me in German- "schau' mal her, dieser VW hat was besonderes- Benzineinspritzung!" (look at this, this VW has something special- fuel injection!)

Good eye...I always thought it was my 63 but mint .
But the hood chrome puts it later 68. _________________ 63 Type 3 1500 notch

Saw this one the other day. In Halt and Catch Fire S2E9, when Gordon gets lost in a parking garage, you can see several VWs including a late model type 3. |

The Bionic Woman (1977) TV show season 3 episode 7 named "Motorcycle Boogie". Jaime Sommers (actress Lindsay Wagner) goes to West Germany on assignment to retrieve spy tapes from "the East" . She is helped by motorcycle stunt rider Evel Knievel as they cross the Iron Curtain border from West Germany on his motorcycle. Road map shows Wolfsburg, with the intended town being east-northeast. 3 Beetles and an orange late Squareback are parked or driven in the background.
Probably the same car:

"Battle of the Godfathers" 1973 movie, filmed in Hamburg, Germany. Passers-by run past the parked Squareback to look at a non-VW car explosion across the street. The VW is not damaged. Dark color could be L66 Deep Sea Green (1970), or L60D Elm Green (1970 & 1971). Looks like it has a green tinge that would not be L41 Black.

Neglected Squareback parked, in 1976 movie "Poliziotti Violenti" seen in the car chase. Chase vehicles have Roma (Rome, Italy) license plates. |

In the James Bond movie "Diamonds are Forever" (1971), a few Type 3 are seen either in background, or in the large parking lot at one of the casinos. The blue Squareback (bonus: grey/white Splittie bus in background) and white Fastback are at the gas station where Tiffany Case (Jill St. John) is at her red '71 Mustang Mach 1.

It was a rainy day here in southern NY so I spent a few hours watching car chases on YouTube. If there was any type of ACVW in the background, I'd take a screen shot. Then I remembered a few VW sightings in Diamonds. Luckily this particular video was better quality than many so that the car images were reasonably sharp. The 2 last shots were "bonuses" where I did not remember or notice the Type 3s in the past. In both of those shots, either the car was standing and the camera was panning, or vice-versa so that it's difficult to clearly discern the wheels. |

"Freebie and the Bean" (1974) was filmed in San Francisco, California. Police detectives Freebie (actor James Caan, driving) and Bean (Alan Arkin) are in a white 1972 Ford Custom 500, chasing a blue Plymouth. There are several Squarebacks and a Fastback in background. My computer's old browser is not enabling viewing a few more car chase videos from this movie, so I imagine there could be more Type 3 seen.

White Squareback parked at right in movie "Black Eye" (1974). Filmed in Venice, California with the white mid '60's Mustang (not seen here) being chased by the blue Chevy, taking the Venice canal bridges at high speed and getting airborne. Guessing a '66 or '67 due to no visible headrests and the big-slot trim rings from the 4-bolt wheel style. |

"The French Connection", 1971, filmed in Brooklyn, New York. Looks like a red Notchback,
then a blue Squareback during the exciting car chase sequence. NYC Police Detective "Popeye" Doyle (Gene Hackman) drives past in the now-battered 1971 Pontiac LeMans.

"Street People" filmed in San Francisco, California 1978. Near the beginning of the car chase, a white early Squareback is parked in the background. |
