Got a lot of work done on Gloria over the holiday weekend.
Replaced the Oil Cooler and Main Seal
New Clutch in and ground down the fly wheel

Got the engine in, started her up, oil everywhere! Engine back out, and found out that I over tightened the studs for the Oil Cooler...Fixed that. Engine back in, generator light on! Turns out that the generator was on it's way out, volt meter read only .85 at idle and 1.5 with gas. Couldn't find a generator in the area, debated an alternator swap for a day, checked every thread I could find on the subject, decided on doing the swap...engine in.

6 hours later with a new fuel pump, Beetle backing plates, Alternator Stand off of a 73', and grinding down part of the Alternator, I now have a bus with an Alternator. YAY!

Also finally got around to moving my fuel filter off of the engine.

Got the corner and battery tray cut out, started fitting the panels.

Also, 2 rainy days at the junkyard and 10 dead sawzall batteries later I got the hatch hole from a vanagon.

GMATech,

Cut out your old access hatch carefully, someone with a 68-72 may want it!

GMATech Mon Jan 05, 2015 5:14 pm

Thanks, I'll do my best to save the old hole.

Today started as a "rotate the tires and relax" kinda day after getting stuck in the snow last night and thinking about tire tread. It had been 20,000 since my last rotation… Naturally, the day turned in to:

- Rotate ties
- Wash undercarriage
- Wax roof
- Install new VDO tach (thanks dad!)
- New rear hatch striker rubber block
- New fuel door rubber stops
- Onboard parts inventory & restock
- Clean and organize all onboard tools
- Drop my spare engine case off for supreme cleaning
- Drop spare heads off at Headflow Masters for rebuild
- Pick up new engine tin powdercoat, batch 1 of 3
- Oil all body and door points
- Remove all door seals for inspection and rust prevention.
- Remove and reinstall damper pipe with correct exit angle to stop minor leak.

put the 72 up for sale :(

edit, and sold it an hour later! :D

I still need to cut it a little higher up because there's a crease that goes all the way to the belt.

Now I need to get the pipes mounted on the rails before I can put the corner panels fully on. Then it's on to the engine hatch. I think it's gonna be a little wide. Still need to find a steel vanagon hatch too.

Adjusted brakes, swept out the inside and double checked spare parts and tools. Gonna check the air pressure this weekend, spare is low and we would be all set for out Tucson trip. Can't wait!!!

That looks great! Care to share what you did?

dillon70 Fri Jan 23, 2015 11:18 am

These were strictly plug and play. I picked up two lights with the holders included from a guy at a parts house that got them from a vendor to try out.
I think I was the guinea pig, but what a bitchin mod. I can actually see how slow I am going now
