The only thing that I would question IMHO is if the crank has those stupid oil grooves running around the main bearings.... My trusted old sages( they raced VW's in the 60's) inform me that the concept sucked 40 years ago and it still does now.
A groove running the circumference of the mains reduces the surface area of your bearings. The mains carry alot of force on them. You need that surface area. If that surface area wasn't needed VW would have made their bearings that much narrower. Also everyone and their brothers cranks would have those grooves.
Just like full circle cranks,it's all in the advertising.
I think the purpose of the groove is for better oiling...but at what cost ?
You should also price out those parts individually.
I have noticed that alot of people sell "engine kits" as a complete unit but If you buy the same items separately they cost less then these "Complete kits"
I've seen it on more then one web site.
how much is that kit going for? |

hi, im from the uk, and that kit costs £1595, so like $2600 ish!?
i worked out that for the money i got the heads, case, h beams and the crank. but its all the other little bits that add up, not the main parts.
im gettin an engine kit like the scat one, but for a 1776cc with either FK7 and 1.4:1 rockers, or 125cam and 1.4:1 rockers, not sur yet though, still be kickin good bhp at the wheels on 44s and sum more porting work. :D |

Word of caution. Even though its a kit, doesnt mean it will just fall together. check every thing. or as much as you can.
Ex: I put together a motor a few years back, and it just happen to be a kit from Scat, (not scat's fault) but the VW mag case that came with it had a taper on the center main saddle. |

Has anyone had any problems with these? I just bought an 82mm forged crank from Scat that has grooved mains, I was planning on using it in a 2110cc engine for my daily driver bus. |

My crank has the groves and after four dyno runs, and 60 1/4 miles passes it all looked good.
I'm not sure it's good to have them, but I'm not sure it's all that bad either. |

Fully groved mains are good, but make sure you use the best oil pump possible to compensate for the additional flow increase/pressure drop. |

Look at all crankshafts including Ford, Chevy, Honda, Toyota etc.... How many of them have the grooved cankshaft. |

The modified factory crank out of my blown/nitro 392 Hemi has oil grooves all the way around the mains, but the unmodified factory hemi crank doesn't. The Nitro motor puts out tons of power, while the stock is only about 300 HP. Both cranks started life as stock production items and work well, and I haven't had a problem with either. IMO, the jury's still out on wether the grooves are a benifit or a detriment.
I have no experience with Scat internal engine parts, however I once ordered an engine tin kit from Scat. I'll never do that again. If their engine parts are as crappy as their sheetmetal, I'd never trust them with my motor.

If you get the kit directly from Scat it's only $2050. |
