Hello All. I need to request some assistance from anyone who might be currently restoring a '60 Micro (or any correctly correlating small taillight year) Splitty. The original taillight openings have been hacked for some horrible oversized ones. Of course I want to correct this transgression. If someone would be so kind as to take a template of the correct position while they have their assemblys out I'd appreciate it, and will gladly compensate for your efforts and postage. Regards, -K-

PS - Just e-mail me for details.

I'm just a 1-year newbie to all of this, but if the pros on this forum don't respond with exact specs I'll be happy to take measurements on my 1956 standard as the original holes are unmolested (even though the PO got creative and added 2 other holes for a pair of pontiac taillights...sigh)

'58 dollar T/L were positioned further up

sometime in 1959 (pretty early I think) they moved the T/L down to this position and kept them there till they went to a bigger T/L assembly

make sure you get the right measurement!!!

I need the locaion for a 60 bus. Whatever is cheapest in t/l opions. I will just be cleaning up a bus and moving it out of my shop. any measurements would be better than the 62 up lights in it now!

I just need a template of the correct position for the taillight openings for my '60 Standard Microbus. I was thinking along the lines of some type of heavy paper like from a grocery bag or butchers paper or something that could be taped to the bus and follow the contour. Then provided the taillight assembly is out (that's why I asked for someone who had theirs out already) you can mark the outline with a sharpie from the inside. Once you pull the paper and cut out the tracing, "whala!" Instant template. Neat huh? I think that would be the best approach, so as to avoid the potential error from taking measurements. I'll be greatly appreciative, and I'm certainly willing to compensate someone for their efforts/materials,postage. Regards, -K-

here is photo from page 8, chapter E-6, from Bentley volkswagen transporter manual 1950-1962. Whish it will help you. You just have to enlage it to see all measurements. If you need more, i will go in the garage to take measurements from a cut rear corner.

Can someone give me these measurements, as I can seem to blow up and clearify that pic?

I have just been through the same PO hack job. This center location is what I got from a friends 59 and jeremyrockjock sent me the diameter schematic.

I have been through my 63-67 Bentley, is there a diagram for the oval taillight somewhere? I am not finding it in either the manual or the site.

Any help would be appreciated.

Can somebody post a pic from a 1959-1961 rearlight without the lamp?(just the cutout)

I'm not sure if it's just a round hole with 2 schrewholes or a hole with vertical cuts. (Like this)

I think i've seen both.

Hello to all...

There has anyone knows from what number the frame and also what month of the year 1959 do we find the change of position lights back on our old bus ...
Is it possible to find bus from the period '60 and '61 with the heading "high" tail lights?
I need your lights ...
I need to clarify this mystery.
Thank you for all your responses.
Best regards.
Vincent.

Hi,
Thank you "Clara".
For your reply and the link that you give us ...
a true bible of the VW, I do not know ...
Now, after you,
Types 2 / bus after December '58 is equipped with rear lights in the down position?
I speak for all models (US / European / export ...)
It is a logical or perhaps there are exceptions?
Thank you again for everything.
Best regards.
Vincent.

After looking at the taillights of my Feb. 59 kombi. I noticed with the bumper over-riders the tail-lights are not always fully visible at different angles.

I seems that if safety was a concern when adding over-riders to the rear bumper and brake lights to the tail-lights on US spec buses that they would not have lowered them to be partially blocked from view.

Exactly what I thought from the get-go (and still think) but I figured I was being too critical. Plus, back then, if a big ol' American Iron chrome-bumpered behemoth climbed up and over a VW bus bumper that overrider wouldn't do a lot unless it were just a parking lot nudge.
