Scott, what size rivet did you use and where did you get them? I have a set of CE's and plan to put them in my bus one day (I've said that now for the 3 maybe 4yrs they've been sitting in my office). Also did you install them the way the factory tech sheet shows or did you just drill the holes and use the little screws? Thanks in advance for your info...

I used the reproduction rivets from Wolfsburg West: http://www.wolfsburgwest.com/cart/DetailsList.cfm?ID=211847495.

I just screwed the hinges into the body with the enclosed screws. They are very secure and haven't loosened at all.

Thanks Scott...

Here are some pics of my bus safari's. They are Wolfgang. I have not had leaks, but did notice that water gets trapped under the seal at the bottom. I use my compressor and blow it out after a drive in rainy weather. These were installed by a previous owner and some of the finish work (paint) has not been completed.

This is the fit with them closed.

This is the passenger's side open and the fit of the driver's.

Weld of the tabs, rivet and latch placement.

Wing nut assembly.

Hope these pics help. They were taken a few minutes ago at night.

rusty57,
can you get a shot of the center mount for the sliders & the outside lower corners. Thank you :D

rusty57 Sun Oct 30, 2005 9:22 pm

This is the center post with both wingnuts. It's in the closed position. Tomorrow I can get some pics of all the corners and better details with day light.

One thing to note on the CE windows that I have seen since installing mine, the seal is much better than the Izzy's and the Wolfgang ones I had before on previous buses and so are the latches. The latches are freak'n bullet proof and I don't ever worry about them breaking. And yes, the frame halfs will fit originals and they are alluminum so they will never rust. I got mine in 6 weeks and they are worth every penny.
A wise man once said, "Never be afraid to buy the best. You'll allways be happy with it."

See ya at Bulli Brigade!!!

Does anyone with Creative Engineering safari's drive with the open at high speeds? I was wondering how they'd hold up being made from aluminum and screwed together at the hinges and slider tabs on the sides?

rusty57 Wed Nov 16, 2005 11:28 am

This is my first safari window bus. I had no idea how it would be to have them. I just always wanted some. I usually drive around base at reasonably slow speeds of 25-45 mph. I can handle it with both windows wide open and a pair of sunglasses. When i drive faster, i usually pop the rear pop-outs and drive with the passenger one wide open and mine either half or 1/4 open. The windows don't vibrate or close at all. I am very happy with the overall preformance of these particular ones. Is it legal to drive with them open on california roads? Anyone ever had a cigarette jump in from another driver throwing one out? Or high speed bug intake? Just wondering.

Scotts 63 23 Wed Nov 16, 2005 11:44 am

45-50 mph is the highest I've driven with my CE's wide open. I actually close up all other windows and it seems the most comfortable. Opening the pop outs or driver's/passenger windows increases the flow very comparable to being on a motorcycle. I usually open them about two inches on most warm days just to get some extra air flow into the driver's seat...I can drive at any speed with them open two inches. There is a lot of pressure on the window sliders at this speed, since there is so much window surface area being hit with air and once and a while they close if I haven't really tightened them up, but no metal fatigue or hinge failures.

No problem with the wear and tear on the tabs, latches, hinges etc. as a result to the higher speeds...

i have og safari's in my panel, and i drive with them open up to 50mph, i'd like to get a set of the CE windows for another bus if they hold up as well.

i live a few miles out of town, and toward the end of summer i tend to get quite a few paper wasps and honey bees, like you i wear shades and it hasn't been much of an issue. most of them meet their death on the cab divider. much to the amusement of my wife, i did get one bee stuck in my beard while i was raving about how nice safari's are.

Hi Ronnie,

Put mine in about 3 years ago. I wouldn't have a bus without them.

REBBA: those screws used in your safari windows are not phillips. when you 4 lines on a screw head like that -they are posidrive a phillips screw driver will strip the slots out. i found screws like that on my 71 and 65 mini coopers.

My friends can always tell when Ive been driving my bus with the safaris open, My shirt looks like a combo pizza! Yes good days! I cant tell you how many insects Ive snorted but they were natural and high in protein
and I have no obvious bran damage.....

I know what you mean, I'm hooked since I put the set in my panel. One of those things where I wished I had spent the money years ago, they would have been sweet in those hot, humid North Carolina summers.
Do you drive with them open in excess of 40mph often?
