View original topic: Piston coolers, oil squirters

Does anybody have information, drawings, how to's on machining the Type 1 case for oil squirters, which squirters do I have to get etc. I know the VW TDI engine uses squirters. I am preparing a 1914cc engine for a later turbo installation and I would like to use piston coolers.
All help will be appreciated.

8) Peace Dom

if you really need them ..you would only need them on one side as the crank splashes one set of pistons due to the direction it spins

Installing the Porsche piston squirters is somewhat tricky. I can e-mail photos, if you wish --

AJ Simms does this for his turbo motors, don't know if he'll spill the beans though.

rimco can do it for you too, i think.

i've seen a type 4 case done by them, but i'd guess they do it for type 1 also.

This mods been done on Type I's for over 25 years.

Could you post the pics?

Doubtful. I'm OK with the Bridgeport, but a dunce with the computer ---

I think Bruce can paste the photos. This is the text:

Porsche piston squirters are available for a couple bucks apiece from some Porsche machine shops. I used to get mine from Ray Litz, who had a shop in the Pasadena area. The squirters are available in at least two types: standard, and turbo. The VW uses standard.

The squirters have a check valve in them (ball & spring). Pretty nice. The optimum angle of the squirter positions the 6mm installation hole to overlap the oil groove by about 50% (assuming you use the bearing type with groove on the backside), which is plenty of oil supply for the tiny squirter hole. The installation hole is drilled from bearing side with a tapered 1/4" drill (following a pilot hole of slightly smaller diameter).

The 6mm squirter drops easily into the 1/4" hole, and is carefully driven in the last 1/4" (where the hole tapers down in size), with about a .002" interference fit. When drilling with the 1/4" drill, you should stop just short of poking through the piston side of the case, leaving you with a bit of meat to hold the squirter in place.

This is the proper way to install squirters. Some guys cheat and go from the piston side, and then peen the squirter in place. This is not recommended. The output end of the squirter is delicate, while the backside is beefy (to allow it to be driven in).

Paul, do you just eyeball the angle?

I had a type 1 case installed with the Porsche oil squirters, Rimco did the install. I will see how this works out in the future as this is a street turbo engine.

The pics show the squirters being installed in the left half. But up top, Mech_Meister said they aren't necessary on the left side, I tend to agree.
Robert, did Rimco do all 4?

Yes.

Besides Porsche, aircraft also use oil squirters on each piston to cool down the piston top, (good for lowering high temps from boost).

I was just looking at a new Mooney Brovo the other day and it also had oil injection on each exhaust valve/guide/spring area on each cylinder, it is turboed as well.

My buddy Jon Karcey turned me on to the idea, but didn't really want to experiment with my case. So I spent some time figuring out the correct angle, and yes -- I just eyeballed it on that case.

Porsche doesn't do just half a job on their engines, so I don't think I'd rely on somewhat random splash to take care of one side. If I recall, Porsche's estimated reduction in piston temperature is around 100 degrees F.

BTW, the machining must be started with a 1/4" endmill. A drill bit will wander too much at that severe angle.

this is interesting. any other detailed pictures on this?

I've always drilled squirters into the Connecting Rods. Similar to a Jap engine. Same result, much easier, and cheaper.

There are so many ways you can install "squirts". YOu can machine the hole directly in the case just by drilling the proper size jet hole and facing with an endmill. Or you can also machine inserts that you can press-in. Or install threaded ones. You can also make some with "O" ring and secure w/ a tab and hex bolt. These are all the different styles out there.

But they all do the same purpose.

The easiest one is to just machine the case directly. A facing cut with an endmill and then followed by spotting drill. Then you can drill for the desired jet hole all the way through the back of mains.

You can also use MIG welding tips...these come threaded already. All you need to do is spotface the threaded hole after you tap and it is held in there nicely.

Cheers.

Where can I get the Porsche oil squirts? I have looked on line and most Porsche suppliers don't advertise these little things. Does any one have a part # they can share?
