  View original topic: Main bearing #2 different design KS vs GLYCO type ?

Hi,
I am intend to build 1600cc stock engine with NOS std/std cross-drilled 69mm german crankshaft , I got the original VW factory main bearings set with the crank in 4 small nice old blue VW box ( just for old sime sake ) :oops:
However I bought before a new set of KS , and I observed that there is a different between the main bearing #2 ( the two halves bearings )

I put from the old blue VW box GLYCO bearing above the KS for compare in the photo , the lower is the set that I bought recently of KS.

1. The GLYCO upper bearing has groove outside between the bearing toward the case = the KS lower bearing has groove inside between the bearing toward the crank.

2. The GLYCO upper bearing has hole for the oil near to the edge = The KS lower bearing has hole for the oil almost in the middle of the bearing near to the dowel pin

My questions:

Why there is a different between them ?

Which one is better / recommended to use the "old style original VW fatory" GLYCO or the new "late style" KS ?

By the way I checked and compared all the VW factory bearings to the new set that I bought and I didn't found any different except main bearing #2 , also all VW factory bearing are KS except bearing #2 which is GLYCO.... strange ? :?

Just a different design bearing.
Have had some Kolbenschmit bearigs with that oil groove on either side.
All Mahles I have used have the oil groove on the backside.
Not a big difference.
If you use the bottom bearing be sure the oil port lines up with the port in the case.

If you want to get very particular about bearings I'd use the KS bearings. If there is no groove on the outside (mating of bearing/case side) it will have maximum surface area containing the bearing. So more surace area will maintain the "crush" of the 2 main bearing halves.

The oil groove on the inside will/should provide oil regardless of what rotation the crank is in.

Depending on the mag case your using the oil gallery in the bearing saddle main not line up perfectly with either glyco or KS bearing. Easy fix is to mark the location of the oil gallery on the case and you may have to get a dremmel to oblong/oval/chamfer the hole on the bearing so you'll get maximum oil flow in that little hole drilled into the main bearings.

I've seen alot of holes not line up and only get maybe 2/3 max oil flow. This is what siezed the turbo engine on that show "monster garage". The flywheel end bearing didn't allow oil to flow enough at high rpms. Who knows maybe the endplay was a tad on the tight side.

You'll find alot that the little dinky end main bearing on the crank pulley side is the only bearing that has a hole lined up to the bearing saddle on the case.

In my personal stash I have boxes of German KS bearings and they have the groove on the inside of the 2 bearing halves.

But really you wont see any issues using both.

What could happened if the oil port doesn't lines up with the port in the case ?

I wonder why the oil port is in different place in the 2 different bearings ? I think it should be the same location the oil port lines up with the port in the case.since it's critical for oil flow to lubricate the bearing & crank


Maybe becuase there is a different type1 cases .....

However I'll use it for brand new brazilian AS41 mag case.

Usually you will hear a screech and then a bang......... :shock: :)


Like Alan said, either style will work.
Just be sure the case oil port lines up with the port hole in the bearing or the groove in the backside.
