Just got off the phone with tatum motorsports,They said I should use a four piston caliper in the rear and a two piston in the front. They seem to know what they are talking about and I am going to use their kits. but this sound backwards to me. He said it was because most of the weight is in the back of the car. oops should have said this is on a thing. It would seem to me that on pavment most of the weight will still transfer to the front. Just when I thought I had it figured out they change the rules!!!

This is true. On the pavement the wight bias will tranfer to the front of the car because of the grip the tires have on the pavment. but on dirt it is backwards. the tracktion and grip is going to be were the wieght is and that of course is in back

Before you buy Tatum brakes...

So I guess you could factor that in and/or do a little more research if you plan on forkin the dough.

I payed 14 hundred bucks for my tatum brakes, and if I had to do it again I would of choose another brand. They look good, work good but the brackets were not machined wright and nothing fit wright. And there cutomer serviced sucked for me.

Yikes!!! this is not the response I was looking for. I think I will do more research. It is hard when you live 3000 miles from were all this cool stuff is made. Its not like I can go down to the local buggy shop and look at this stuff. so what I am saying is thanks for the help. How about gear one. How is the fit and finish? Customer service any good?

I put gaer-one on my baja and they bolted right up w/o any problems, and they look tuff. I went 4 piston in the rear and 2 up front . If I get a chance Ill post some pics tomarrow.

This will see some street use, would it be better to go four piston all the way around? Or will this just cause the fronts to lock up to soon in the dirt?

Four piston is way over kill, unless you are going to be going extremely fast. Look at the Wilwood set ups for about the price of the Tatums.

The Pro-Am line at Kar Tek is high quality also. I ran their front kit and had zero problems with it... 8)

The guys at pac customs swear by the tatum stuff. they were telling me that the display car on the show room floor had a jmar kit on it and it leaked all over the floor. On that same token, i called tatum once and asked them a couple of questions and the guy was allright with me but he did say that he needed to machin off .02 of an inch on the bracket(somewhere on it, dont know where) to get them on a customers rail. that is the experiance i have had with them so far. I would go with tatums personaly b/c of the size of the rotor and ease of changing the hub if i had to. I looked at the cms kit offered by vee dub parts and they just look realy small. Baja 5 any comments on this.???

Well what I need to do is talk all these companys that make brake kits for VW's to send me a FREE kit for testing. They will go for that right. Well it's nice to dream. Been looking at all my choices and now my head is ready to explode. So much for this being on of those easy projects. I have used willwood stuff in the past with good luck. Just hate to make the wrong choice and end up with shitty brakes.

I second the KarTek/ Pro Am stuff. Much better than Tatum. And they are good people to deal with. http://www.kartek.com/
Here is the Pro Am set up on my 4 seater.

Here is the set up for a combo spindle

apparently you don't understand the dynamics of *not* being able to climb a hill and having to roll down backward. it helps to have the front brakes turned off.

Talked to Kartek and they do not make a brake kit for a type1 stub axle. :x They said go with cnc. What I was wondering is would it be worth returning my rear arms and get ones for micro stubs so I can use the pro-am brake kit. and do they make micro stubs for 930 joints. Would I also need longer axles. I would want to stay with 3x3 arms of some sort. I do not want to cut corners on brakes. Any advise woud be a big help.

Baja Ben Thu Mar 16, 2006 9:25 pm

yes and yes and yes again

ThingDriver Fri Mar 17, 2006 5:02 am

If you can swing it, go with the microstubs... You'll get more rear travel and help relax the CV angles if you do... KarTeks micro stub kits are really nice.

jaybe_2 Fri Mar 17, 2006 5:17 am

Stub's it is. Any one want to buy some 3x3 arms and axles to go with them.

jaybe_2 Mon Mar 20, 2006 11:04 am

I am down to either kartek or jamar pro x both micro stubs. I like the looks of the pro x stuff and it comes with a life time warranty. They are almost the same price so that does not matter. The rotor size is the same also 10" front w/ 2 piston cal. 11" rear w/4 piston cal. kartek does not have the good warranty but they seem to have a good reputation. Any one have any thoughts?
