Do any of these superchargers have a VW stamping on them? Once in awhile I hear of a VW stamped charger but when picts comes up they're just the watercooled smog pumps. So want to know in case I passed some real deals in the past when I assume their the smog pumps because of the stamp markings.

VW's official company line was "No supercharging" when it came to air cooled motors, I don't think that any of these companies had VW's official endorsement.

That's certainly the case with Judsons. When the VW model was first introduced in 1956 you could go to a lot of VW dealerships and order a Judson. That was until VWOA threatened any dealership supplying non VW parts and accessories with the withdrawal of their franchise.

Because of this restriction of trade The US Justice Department took out an anti-trust lawsuit against VWOA in the early '60s.

The suit found against VWOA but by that time Judsons had resorted to selling direct from the factory.

I pretty much know there was no "officially" recognized supercharger, but just had a couple guys in another forum claiming they used to own a vintage supercharger (made in US) with a VW stamping on them on their running motor, but I haven't seen a picture yet to indentify what they're talking about. And one of them is for sale but don't want to look further into it w/o more proof and research

My guess will be that it'll turn out to be, as you said, one of these smogpumps:

Shorrock,Pepco, M.A.G - 2000 to 3500$
Judson - 1500 to 2500$

Going rates for a pepco is usually around $1000 depending on what little tid bits come with it. $1500 should get you a complete setup. MAGs are usually $500 more with Shorrocks above that. The last time I asked Alejandro Martin in Brussels, he wanted ~3500 for a complete rebuilt shorrock set. Judsons... just watch the samba and ebay, they come up often between 750 and 2000, again, depending on what pieces are missing.

Back to MAG - Motosacoche Aktiengesellschaft to be more precise: here's a little light reading:

Is there anyone in the US running a Mag Supercharger in a Ghia?

DaveM Sun Apr 30, 2006 8:02 am

my mag/okrasa motor will go in my 58 ghia vert.... WHEN it get's finished.

Speedsterboy Tue May 02, 2006 3:38 am

So that's just about you and I Dave! Do you know what carbs they specified to use? My Mag was a personal import from 1955-56 and he claims they never came with carbies but they did specify what sort of carb to run. He is firm about the fact that he had to run a Solex 32 PICB or PIBC...as specified from the Mag literature he received when he personally purchased it from Switzerland which he consequently installed in his Bug upon arrival. He remembers a staggering increase in the power when he bolted it on at the time...do you have a decent photo of the linkage set-up on how it connects to the stock accelerator cable? I keep looking at the diagram and I can't seem to identify how it actually works..I also have bits of what appears to be linkage parts that I can't seem to rationalize...
Thanks,
AL

You are correct in the carb should be the solex 32... same as the one used on the okrasa kit. There is some linkage that bolts to the supercharger itself along with a pivot that goes on the piece that bolts to the original manifold. This was the only piece missing from my kit when I got it and Alejandro Martin in Brussels supplied me with a very nice reproduction ( :-S )

I’m not located in the US, but I have a MAG Supercharger for VW. Most unfortunately this is not at complete setup. It is blower only. My plan is to complete the set with reproduction parts. I will seek to replace them with genuine parts, in case I have the luck to get hold of them later on. I’m currently running a Judson setup and like to gain some hands on experience with the MAG Supercharger. I’d like to put the MAG on my second car and make some performance comparison testing.

Anyone know if it exist a registry for MAG Supercharger owners?

Could you please post a photo Mr. Mayes of both the pivots and around the carb areas!

DaveM Wed May 03, 2006 6:55 am

Here is the throttle pivot made by Alejandro Martin.

I have a number of other pictures of the mag setup on my web page:
http://www.amayesing.com/blowers.htm
but this is probably the best picture I have of a complete set (not mine).

Pretty impressive waste disposal unit Dave

It does look pretty funky huh.... I think the ghia installation is much better with the air cleaner right on top of the carb.

Now, I'm interested to know if anyone has an elbow piece cut for a ghia (the one that connects to the intake manifold). Note for a bug, the air cleaner goes on the piece at the end of the tube, the ghia doesn't have the tube. I have an og piece but refuse to cut it. hmmmm, maybe I can put flowers in that piece or something lol

Speedsterboy Wed May 03, 2006 7:32 pm

Thanks for the photo dave, I have tried to e-mail Alejandro before but I never got a reply when I was putting my Judson together...how much was the linkage pivot reproduction. I have everything in my kit except for that pivot piece. I am also interested in running mine with the stock ghia aircleaner but again, I'm not really sure how this is done because of the difficulty of trying to build this with just the diagram.

DaveM Thu May 04, 2006 6:47 am

Be patient with Alejandro... he does travel a lot. If you havent heard back from him, email again. I know pretty quick he is off to spain and a few shows.

... and I don't know the cost of the pivot. We trade stuff back and forth often and he sent the pivot to me once because I needed it.

The stock ghia air cleaner fits right on top of the carb, replacing the tube... and like I say, you're supposed to cut the piece that mounts directly to the original intake manifold. I've asked Alejandro to reproduce that piece just so I don't have to cut my original one.

Here's my MAG supercharger, also incomplete! Luckily I live in Belgium and so is Alejandro, so I'll see him on most meetings here in Belgium. He's a very busy man but he will provide me the missing parts. I have a pricelist in French but I can't figure out the different parts. My French is terrible.

Speedsterboy Wed May 10, 2006 8:54 pm

Anyone know where Alejandro might be, sent e-mails but no reply...
