1978 Limited Champagne Edition Westfalia
I always heard that 52 were made between 1/78 and 4/78. 26 went to Canada and 26 to the States.

I've seen at least 5 here in Wisconsin the past 5 years or so, so I think there are a lot more than 26.

I JUST PURCHASED A 1978 BUS. VIN #2282088749, BUILT 2/78. I WANT TO KNOW IF IT IS A CE. IT IS EXACTLY THE SAME AS FLABOY'S PICTURED (POSTED APR 25, 2006; AKA "THE TURD") BUS. PANAMA BROWN OVER AGATE BROWN WITH THREE STRIPES DOWN SIDE AND FRONT, BROWN DASH, STEERING WHEEL, ETC, ETC.

STOP ALL THIS YELLING!!!

The brown dash and brown steerring wheel clearly indicate a champagne edition. Intermitttant wipers also.

Bill, please don't type in all caps. It's the same as shouting.

Yes, you have a Champagne Edition.

:( Sorry about the caps. My first time posting. Thanks for the info, this will give me direction for restoration purposes.

Yeah.. uhhh... no... your bus is Fox Red over Date Brown.

The Dakota Beige/Agate Brown bus was a regular edition passenger bus.
(Dakota Beige is sort of a tan color; Agate Brown is Hershey Bar, where Date Brown is Hershey Special Dark)

The paint codes are Fox Red = LH3A; Date Brown = LH8A

bills71vert Fri Jul 07, 2006 1:56 pm

:D I was going off of color charts posted online (in archives), just guessing at the colors. Thanks for setting me straight. I will retain those color codes to return "Cleebie" to his original state.

ChuxBus Fri Jul 07, 2006 2:11 pm

No problem.

Actually, I had taken your misinformation and made it worse...

The regular edition brown bus I was referring to (and which I now own a painted-over example of) was Dakota Beige over Agate Brown. There was also a combination of Dakota Beige over Panama Brown, which is a sort of orangey-brown.

Congratulations on your acquisition. My first bus was an 8-year old 1978 Champagne II passenger bus with a sunroof.

By the way... it is not-kewl newbie behavior to ride around with a dashboard clock in your bus. Carefully remove it and send it to me for proper disposal, and I will send you the way-kewl block-off plate so you can impress your friends...

Karl,

My CE Westy has a build date of 15 April 1978. VIN 116 262 (last 6 digits)

My Champagne Westfalia's birthday is Jan. 30, 1978.

What is the build date on the silver sticker and the last 6 of the vin?
The build date will be just month and year, i.e. 02/78.

Seeing a Jan 30 date tells me when VW completed the bus to be sent to Westfalia.

:?: Can anyone give me info on the c.e. I would like to know about all the equipment that was offered, how many produced, if the c.e. is worth a premium over a regular bus, and anything else that might be of pertinent use toward restoring a c.e. to its original state. Any brochures or links that I could look up would be most helpful. Thanks :?:
