I have a stock 1600 sp w/ dual carbs I'm building. It currently has all the stock tin w/ a dog house. The heater boxes are junk and I won't be needing them as I only run it in the summer. Question is, with the "J" pipes taking the place of the fatter heater box, do I need some extra tin to cover the large gap left where the heater box was? Didn't know if this large gap would affect cooling ability of the engine?

Im running a 1600 dp. I replaced my heaterboxes about a month ago with j-tubes. it seems to run better then before and I didn't add any extra tin. the freakin heater boxes weigh a ton.. I think one of those is as heavy as my whole new exhaust.. (single tip monza)

if you have the tin you should run it. some j tubes have tabs that hang off of them to attach the tins. the ones i see look like 2 skinny strips of sheet metal a couple inches long.

You need 73 Thing lower tins.

Hey Glenn,
you wouldn't happen to have dimensions on those would you?

They look easy enough to fabricate, but it would be much easier if one knew what sort of dimensions will actually fit.

I take these are for a 73 with a gas heater setup.

It seems these bits of tin would be most useful to a lot of us who are no longer running the std heater setup and certainly much more useful in terms of cooling than just bolting the j-plates to the j-tubes.

Looks like Glenn is on the money...again. I think I'll fabricate a pair for my motor. This would also keep the thermostat running properly I think. Here's another question. Does the later stock doghouse thermostat have a longer stroke than the earlier-non doghouse setup? Was wondering cause my doghouse flaps need like twice the travel on the actuator rod to open them than do the earlier air flap setup??? Any ideas??

Gene Berg sells copies called "Industrial Shields" I think the part numbers are GB-4700R and GB-4700L.

Does anyone else carry these tins? Berg does not seem to have them on their site anylonger?
Any one have dimensions for these? They look easy enough to make.

I think you should check your measurments. One side is a different length than the other, otherwise the same. So I found out as I made a left and right as mirror of each other and one fit and one was too short.

So which side corresponds to the measurements posted above? What are the new ones?

Seems to me I could make these up much cheaper. Having dimensions would help. Though I bet they could be fabbed up without them if necessary.

Anyone made their own yet?

Thanks for the clarification. Still seems high.
I will wait for Glenn's other drawing and try my hand at making my own. Can't be that difficult.

I bet the drawing is the same for both sides. You just flip the drawing over and bend them in the opposite direction.

128vw tried making both to the same dimensions and one was too short according to his earlier post. Too cold in my garage to go verify!
