Keep an eye on the classifieds here on The Samba. They do come up for sale from time to time. Also, it doesn't hurt to place a want to buy ad in the classifieds...that is how I found the remaining clips that I needed.

Old thread with updated method of installing seal and trim for pop outs on a Fastback. After messing with my drivers window for hours trying to keep the glass in place while installing the chrome I was finally successful. At that time I decided that the passenger pop out would be different as both my thumbs and attitude were shot.
Gorilla Tape to the rescue, have used this on many projects so thought I would give it a try for this scenario, success! Simply push glass all the way to the front of the seal, making sure the glass is fully seated, then tape the inside of all three sides and you are done. The second window took 15 minutes (ymmv)!

OK, done putting this off.
First, I think this is the frame for the right side?
Second, this is the channel that the frame fits into?
Here is a bit of my first attempt at putting the frame in.
Comments?

Next question. Is this the slot for the "C" trim?

Should the ends of the frame wind up in the seal joints?

Brents pictures make it look like the end of the 2-inch section can be exposed in order to push the frame in.
Here's what mine looks like. Am I supposed to cut into the seal to expose the end of the 2-inch section?

OK, cutting the seal it is.
And sure enough, there's the U shaped channel.
Next ... find the correct end of the correct frame and slip it into the channel. Do that with both ends and put the frame into it's groove all the way around.
The window is inserted into the seal around the big end. Have to be careful with the tape because there's tint on the inside of the glass. I don't want the tape to pull the tint off.
I think I'll need to tape the rest of the way around before putting the trim in the seal and then roping it all into the car.
I think that's the order.

Still struggling. And re-reading earlier posts.
On Apr 21, 2012 Brent wrote: The glass does need to go into the seal more. The corners are not molded, it's just a loop. It doesn't stay in place without holding it, it just pops out. I think if we could manage to somehow 'glue' that end in the seal it would work. Once is fit in the car the seal would get pushed into place.
Interesting idea.
On Apr 21, 2012 Brent wrote: After reading the replies this afternoon I was encouraged to give it another go seeing as they have actually been installed successfully by DIY'ers.
Well, I got one side in! Trim, clips, nuts, and all. Fits really nice.
What I did different was pushed the glass as much and as hard as I could into the forward section of the seal. This left about a 3/4" gap at the back. From there, I stuffed a block between the end of the glass and seal/frame to hold it in tension and in place. While keeping pressure on the glass from popping out of the front, I worked in the trim. Then it's more or less a normal install, but you just need to be careful to get the studs from the frame in place.
On Apr 22, 2012 Brent wrote: Next, fit the trim into the groove on the outside of the seal. I did it a few inches at a time just using my thumb to pull back on the seal and let it fall into the trim. Be careful not to move the glass around too much and periodically push the glass into the forward part of the seal as before. This will take awhile, but when you're done it will be like this.
I don't seem to have a problem with the seal being too long. Maybe Alex made adjustments after the first run. But my painters tape isn't enough to keep the seal from popping off the glass. And I don't want to f-up the tint with stronger tape. I do have some 3M Black Super Weatherstrip and Gasket Adhesive that I used on the rear hatch seal. I could certainly try that on the forward fixed part of the glass.
Unless someone gives me a good reason not to. ;-)

That worked OK.
The difference:
1) Carefully excavate the channel for the frame ends with a knife. I couldn't even see where that channel was without cutting.
2) Glue the glass into the forward part of the seal. This makes installing the trim easy-peasy.
However, the 3M adhesive is really tough to get off once it sets up. On the second window I'll clean up while it's still wet.
The left side window is ready to be roped in.

Roping the seal in ... take 1. Not entirely successful.
Problem 1: I positioned the rope wrong at the studs such that the rope was behind the studs when I started pulling. I know better now.
Problem 2: Even though I did get the seal pulled to the inside, one part at the rear, didn't seat far enough. I can probably start by push that part in first next time.
Problem 3: The headliner material gets pulled out by the rope. I'm using 3M Hi-Strength Adhesive and it just can't hold the material. So right now it's a mess I'll have to fix before the next attempt.
Can anybody recommend a better adhesive for this?

I always used contact cement for headliners, the stinky stuff , not the water based crap. |

Your main headliner should be installed first, with the post pieces installed after. Looks like you have it reversed here. Should be much tighter as well, but I'm sure you already know that now. |

Thanks. Since I already have it, I'm trying the 3M Weatherstrip and Gasket adhesive. It's all clipped up. Maybe give it a day to really set.

:-k I don't think that will do so well brother. Maybe well enough to hold it while you put the seal in. |

I have to agree with Notchboy on this. The contact cement will do a better job holding the headliner in place, especially around the windows (that's what VW used back in the day). |

Got one in. Not perfect, but serviceable.
On the contact cement ... more specifics? What kind?

Nuther question.
I have these two outer clips for the right popout. They are correct for the bottom clip.
ISPs labeling of these is confusing. They have the outer clips listed as
311847159A "outer left"
311847160A "outer right"
I think it's 311847159A I need, correct?

I've used the lepages or weldwood solvent based for headliners

Looks like the bubbles are wrong on the site.
What you need:
311 847 157 - Cap, inner (Qty: 2) - These fit left or right, they are not sided
311 847 159A - Cap, outer left (Qty: 1)
311 847 160A - Cap, outer right (Qty: 1) |
