Man that really is turning out real nice mate! :D

So come on and spill de beans on the drive train, is it going to be a sectioned pan? I would trust you wouldn't go the easy way and just make a tube frame, right?. and so the front will have what an 8inch narrowed beam yeah? 8)

you said it will double as a soap box type car too, but it may have a removable engine, could a 1200 be squeezed back there? also what about the glass?

Awesome work.

Will the 8HP B&S be enough? I'd think it would still be pretty heavy.

Can't wait to see more updates.

even with a tube chasis, you would think this thing would still be in the 500lb neighborhood.

i was thinking maybe 2276?

Hebster52 Thu Aug 03, 2006 11:32 am

I'm pretty confident that 8hp is enough... The driver is only 4 years old too...

Remember 25hp is enough to make a Barndoor move....

More progress today:

 Damn! This has got to be one of the most interesting projects I've ever seen. Very cool!

my65vert Thu Aug 03, 2006 5:56 pm

A sliding ragtop would be nice too just in case the grown ups want to take a spin.

oring71 Fri Aug 04, 2006 1:37 am

 Honey they shrunk the bug
Excelent work man keep them pics comeing.

Hebster52 Fri Aug 04, 2006 5:06 am

Thanks all for the nice words so far. :D

I'm actually pretty proud of how I was able to make the rear section of the raingutter etc. line up...

Yustrn Fri Aug 04, 2006 8:41 am

That is amazing work, great job.

67stang302 Sat Aug 05, 2006 9:05 am

Great work you sure are showing your skills on this one. I second the sliding ragtop! :D

Hebster52 Sat Aug 05, 2006 11:01 am

Who wants a ragtop...!? Anybody would be able to make that. Just pick up your Sawsall and start cutting...

But making a 2/3 full roof beetle would require some more effort and skills...

This is what I did today. I only had 2 and a half hours of work today... First made the righthand C-pillar that I had undone.

Then started with a rearpiece of the stock roof:

Then gave it some massaging in my home made English Wheel, some piecuts and got to this. Still needs some adjustments to become perfect, but I had to finish early today.

Wow - That looks like a pile of work!! Good job!

Bugga Sat Aug 05, 2006 11:46 am

Ok i want one now!! Nice work cant wait to see it all done!!

vwdmc16 Sat Aug 05, 2006 2:08 pm

OH YEAH! very good

maybe you could have a "detuned" stock 1200 in it, maybe a removable throttle limiter so the little car could go up to 2000 rpm or maybe 10mph but then as fast as you can muster when the grown ups want a ride by removing the governor.

and if you don't think your kid can handle a full blown stick stift just yet, maybe a super heavy duty centrifugal clutch could be retro fitted instead of the stock clutch, it would only need to handle up to 20-25hp and you could still have 4 real gears + reverse. That way you only need 2 pedals to operate it and can leave/lock the shifter to only work in 1st and reverse. that's what i'd do

BTW what are you classifying it? a go kart, a mini car, or just "the beetle that wolfsberg never made''

Hebster52 Sat Aug 05, 2006 3:07 pm

I will go with the B&S 8hp and the 5 speed transmission that came with it for now. It also have the reverse.

Maybe in the future it would be fun to throw a 12-1600 stock engine. With the engine under the reardecklid the front of the transmission would be past the middle of the doors... so you would have to have a very tight ass to fit in there then...

Oh, I classify it as a Kid Volksrod...

Copper Jewel Sat Aug 05, 2006 10:36 pm

=D> =D> I applaude you sir. Take a bow for one hell of a job!!!

sovereignsamba Sat Aug 05, 2006 11:48 pm

That thing is turning out great!

WolvenGoth Sun Aug 06, 2006 10:54 am

this is totally awesome. my 2cents: since it's far from stock anyway (duh) go on, make it a splitwindow!
