don3751 wrote: You wouldn't, if you could help it. The 'black' argument has to do with metal porosity as it relates to heat dissipation viz. that it's more porous and less insulated than modern three-stage chrome plating. If chrome were better, (And it was certainly available in the early thirties) Porsche would have incorporated it into the design.
stop with the "if chrome were better" or at least stop implying that is what i said..... i said "your tin doesn't care what color it is..."...remember? it isn't about black, chrome, green, purple, or any custom mix you want to put on it.....the stuff is for directing air to cool the engine....not to radiate or "dissipate" heat.... i'll have to go back through and see how many times i've said that now, and maybe point em out to you again, so you won't think i'm advocating CHROME...getting it yet? the "black is better than chrome because it cools better" is apples to oranges....and i even pointed out that it would not be the case for pushrod tubes, valve covers, and sump plates....because of the reasons you state...but the tinware is totally different....that is all i have been saying....but, as i pointed out, chroming the factory stuff would seem to work better based on your theory of reflecting heat back...keep that engine compartment cooler.... |

Thanks for the kind words regarding the fingers. I can tell you a place on a 64-67 bus to keep hands WELL away from...
I know where your argument comes from and I understand agree with it in substance. Lemme lay out the PERFECT tinware setup:
The only reason the tin has anything on it is to prevent rust. Hence a coat of paint. Doesn't really matter which color, because, as you so eloquently put it, the tin doesn't care. You could chrome it, but you'd have the problems I mentioned earlier. Why not make it out of something rustproof? Aluminum tinware would not need any coating, is very porous (great surface area for heat dissipation) and is relatively inexpensive. Copper'd be ideal, but spendy. |

hard lessons are life lessons....doesn't ease the pain, but you probably wont' do it again....i can tell you some secret places that you should keep your hands out of in all kinds of car....been there....never quite that bad, but lots of stitches...

rust is an excellent insulator....i was actually going to mention the above, but have been blasted before that the black was there because it was better....information regurgitation runs rampant....this is also why alot of old time engine builders reccomend a thin coat of black on cylinders(Bob Hoover comes to mind)...not because it is black but because it keeps rust at bay....the black comes in because *if* you have to use a paint to help protect(non-ceramic paint pleast), then why not use what would help you, which black would...because you *do* want to conduct and radiate heat there...(actually convection is what you want at the surface, but i'm pretty sure you actually do know that)....

chrome can be used to keep the heat where you want it....so in places it wouldn't be that bad....but the problem with this reoccuring "argument" is that thousands of folks have read that "black is best" and apply it to everything....when its not necessarily so....in alot of instances it doesn't even matter....(ftr my tinware is all original german and semi-gloss black...except my alt plate.....

see i don't agree with you here....they are not necessary...you don't need the heat transfer properties of aluminum or copper...it wouldn't be a benefit for the air path....with the fan moving air as it was intended it wouldn't hurt you, but it's not necessary....the weight difference might be beneficial, but marginal.... |

its not bad at all....and since the car is "in the process" of bodywork, not even that big of a deal....could have been worse....but i can tell ya, when you stand on four wheel discs a bug will stop quickly....

well....since chrome is such a big issue, im going to use the shroud an tin out of a 74. going to back the firewall black, an shroud an tin the light blue. I figure light color = cooler car.... :? then you guys can stop arguing, i didnt mean for you guys to turn 5 years old.
Tomorrow were going to clean the motor an take the shroud an tin off. going to paint the shroud an tin from the 74 an put it in my 72 bug.
not sure on what idea to use.
Shroud an tin-lightblue with black firewall
or
shroud an tin offwhite (like a beige) with light blue firewall.
not sure yet but will have it done tomorrow |
