Previous bus, '65 micro = $400 in '87. Had no interior, engine and tranny shot, semi-solid body, original paintless. Started a "list of stuff" as I was buying to restore it. As I reached $1500 on just engine, tranny, some interior, etc., figured the next step was to throw away the list :!:  Eternal restoration lasted about 14 years until it just rotted into the ground.

Latest bus '65 walkthru freshly painted shell = $1800 in '01. From the previous one, installed the "bay" disc brake'd front end, freeway flyer tranny, fold-away bed/seat, and louvered windows. Front seats are from 300ZX and the rest of the "camper" interior and paneling is run of the mill do it yourself Home Depot stuff. Oh, yeah, brand new everything 1835 engine = $1300.

$600.00 for my '63 bug, have already put that much more into it...still have a long way to go.

NorCalWeekender Fri Sep 05, 2003 7:29 pm

LOL...bought my current '67 Riviera for $2000 from a guy near San Luis Obispo...found it via the Samba...have since put in over $2000 on stuff that the owner had no idea about, charging, engine, brakes, buncha little stuff. Rather annoying, but I will be damned if I'm selling this thing after putting in so much cash! Interior's nice as hell, tho.

Funny alot of people here gave me shit about wanting a oval for 1-2K, even said I was a cheap F**K. or a greedy F**K. (starts with "a" ends in "la") Guess its not so much to ask for huh?

Paid $3500.

An hour into the trip from Vermont to NY the engine blew.

$3000 for an engine.

4 months later I finally get it home.

I've probably put another $2500 or so into building it my way so far. Maybe another $2000 into the body/paint this winter.

Fuck it, it's mine and I love it.

jmattp Wed Sep 17, 2003 9:16 pm

71 super beetle (yeah..i know..first vw though)crap condition-$4500 (ouch)
66 split bus, no engine, horrible interior, kombi-$500
73 beetle-no egine-traded for bus
66 beetle-$2500-$300 in repairs
68 squareback-$5500 trying to sell it relatively close to that amount
77 westy-$750
67 Notch-dont' really have yet, but trading bus for it

what's next? if I sell my square, something super cheap to drive daily, if I don't, I'm using the square to build the notch. Sounds kinda dumb with all that original paperwork i have, but, it's for a good cause...at least I'll have an awesome notch and some german plates! I don't think it's going to sell for what I want, so keep a look out for a solid pan, chassis, and body
