Yep, I've been doing pretty good - never paid more than $900 for any VW's, and most were a lot less. But then again, I've put a LOT more into most of them- parts and countless hours of time. I've also done a lot of trading - deluxe for single cab, single cab for Westy, bay crew for splitty crew, etc...Also managed to get a lot of them, fix them, drive until the newness wears off, and then sell them to friends & roommates...managed to get the whole house driving vintage VW's at one point.
Next time any of y'all see any more of those $300 Ovals/split bugs/sunroof busses, feel free to let me know.

I paid $100 for my 66 Beetle. It ran but not very well. That car just had a lot of problems. I then bought my 67 Beetle for $300. The body is solid, but there is no engine. One of these days I will actually get around to working on it. And my 72--well let's just say I paid more than I should have for it. I love the car anyway and I have been offered more than I paid for it many times. :)

I see very few of the posts here speak of how they got ripped off, my first car, 1974 super, 1200$+300$ just on sandpaper, tools and whatnot to make it look nice, then another 2800$ in acessories, disk brakes, and replacement parts and many "add ons"to get where i am now, and am still looking at another 2 or 3k for my engine. Makes me feel like a fool... oh well, i still find it to be worth it

Last year I was looking for a 67 bug and while searching ebay found 2 from the same seller. I wasn't high bidder, but they didn't meet the reserve. Later that day I got an email from the guy saying he would sell them for the price they hit which was $1500 for the two and a parts car. I was on my way to San Jose with a towbar the next day. Turns out they were part of an estate for a retired IBM executive. His girlfriend was trying to clear out everything. I sold one of them to a dealer for more than I had in all of them. The parts car went to a guy named Larry in Monterey. The jewel , an original paint car, went to Prescott for way too cheap. Turns out she was a really nice lady and offers to sell me several others. So I wound up with a 71 nonpoptop Westy and a 73 Karmann Ghia. Bryan Peters and I made lots of trips to San Jose that month.

72 poptop westy - 750 -added 914 1700cc motor for 850. carbs - 400 then ran it many miles very hard driving about 90,000 miles later traded it in for 500 value (no reverse, motor weak and steering clunk) --- I still regret it since the bus was in such great shape and so many little things I replaced over the 3 years I owned it.

1958 Kombi - 1200 very good shape (no rear interior) primed and almost ready for paint - previous owner had in garage since 73 and was a side project that obviously wasn't priority??

68 beetle in 97 - 2500. All OG and was damn near perfect.

57 oval in 03 - 1200. Rusted out shitbox. But its gettin better.

My Grandpa paid $400 for my '64 in 1985, I purchased my '60 beetle for the very very exspensive amount of free. My friends vw shop has 50+ buses and type 3s and beetles behind his shop. So I can score any dub for free. :D

I paid $3,000 dollars for my 70 Sunroof Beetle. It seems like a lot but this car was just brought over from California so, it has less rust issues than a Beetle that was always in New York City.

I got my 1980 Deluxe Westy from an old lady in the neighborhood who wanted to see it go to a good home (I have young children). I built a computer for her (she paid for parts) and I helped her with her garage sale. I have had to replace a bad rear wheel bearing and I repacked the cv's and replaced the boots. Oh yeah, new front brake pads. I figure I have spent maybe $150 in parts including stuff like points and plugs. Did I mention everything works? Stove, fridge, sink, pop top. Interior is close to perfect. Exterior paint is oxidized pretty good. Odometer reads 156000 and I found, written in sharpie marker on the bottom of the ashtray, "new engine 145000".
I drive it every day (I live 2 miles from work).

i got my 74 sun bug because my dad worked for this one guy. the customer said he would give him this 74 if he worked on his car. my dad took it and thats how i got my first beetle. not running yet but it still looks good to me. the interiors nice n all, just the motor is a bit bamboozled. need to work on it cause it leeks oil pretty badly.

Well Axel get your story straight because you have the sunbug mixed up with another one. :wink: I bought your 74 standard sunbug for $200 and after installing an ignition switch it ran. :lol: But the flywheel seal leaks like a siv. :cry: That we can fix.

71 super i picked up for 1,900. first car and he had documented engine rebuild tranny rebuild, new solex, new floor pans and sealed the chassis and all that below with the eastwood antirust paint. engine and tranny were rebuilt a year earlier and he drove the car about 10 miles a day.

i love it
working on a ragtop that a guy told me about and said it was free if he mentioned that i was looking at it for him and i was gonna restore it.

75 Westfalia $1800, $1000 in used 2.0 and install, blew 40 miles later, still have this one, hopefully this is the last one!!

64 beetle chassis with 68 kyote body cost me $3000 + $600 in repairs. Had to pay tax on $5000 though because of my insurance apprasial...

Worth every penny!

'64 21 Window: $7500.00 "needed" nothing but I find a way to spend at least a couple hundred bucks a month on it.

"73 Standard Sedan: $3656.50 including new right floor pan and shipping from Brea, CA. Randy @OldBugs is OK in my book. Nice car.

'79 Bay Window: $1750.00 plus, well frankly, I'm too ashamed to say... rebult 2.0L, new paint, blah, blah, blah.
