Hello togehter,
Westfalia build 500 Westies with the SO44 interieur. Does anybody know how many of this Westies had the dormobil roof and how many of them still exist :?:

Very good questions Claus, I would love to know the answer too.
A question for you...how do you know there were only 500 produced? Is this the highest number you have seen or heard of on the little Westfalia plaque below the rear seat? I will include a picture of mine #349:

500 units with S044 interieur were build. I have this information from a german VW bus book. The author is Michael Steincke. They build just a few SO44 Westies with the dormobile roof. SO44 was the most expensive westfalia interieur. Not many people paid 1.300,- DM also for the dormobile roof. Our busses are maybe from the same day :D . My interieur number is 368, also from 1966. Have you got a dormobile roof? Mark Merz told me, that there are about three SO44 with dormobile roof left in the states. It would be interesting to know how many SO44 dormobile were build by westfalia.

try searching "dorm*" in the gallery
then "SO-44"
not a huge number of pics.

I mentioned some SO-44 Dormobiles I have heard of after Clara brought a similar question up.

These are the ones I can think of off the top of my head:
1) I think there is one in the US midwest (his name is Gunter, look for pics on here)
2) One on the BBT website that is being restored:

Hmm...I just bought a Titian red/Beige grey '66 Dormobile with a Westfalia interior in it, from a junk yard last week. The bus is straight, but rusty in the floors and the interior is not in good shape. There is what's left of a closet that sits behind the driver that still has the original coat hanger bar attached to the top of the ceiling of the closet. The closet-ceiling is all that's really left of the closet. The Z-bed is still in-place and fairly intact and both cargo doors have small folding tables still attached. It also has a steering column lock and a gas heater. Mine looks like the one in the picture below, but is not in nearly as nice a condition. It has the same stationary window in the front left for the closet.

I'm curious now. So, I will take pictures of the bus that I purchased and what's left of the rough interior as well as the Westfalia plaque and M codes when I go back to my storage soon.

Wow! Thanks for the great New Year's gift. I never knew my bus was THAT rare. Only 500 produced!! I had to go and climb into mine in winter hibernation just to see what number I have. Mine is #249... right in the middle. Rarer than a barndoor bus, Wow.

Type 2 mister I have not had a chance yet to get a photo of the og curtain you requested. Will try soon have not forgotten.

How many of yours has the german electrical outlets in the rear and inside? Also my fridge has a butane/now propane unit in it to keep the ice box cold? Any of you seen that before.

A registry would be a great Idea.

Thanks for all the information. My Dormobile is the one from Michael Steinke. I picked it up last week. You can see more pictures of the bus later on my homepage. It is a unbelivebal car with first paint and no rust! There are maybe a hand full of SO44 with dormobile roof left. To make a register just for this combination would be boring. Westfalia build about 12000 units with the SO42 interieur. I think a few hundreds SO42 with dormobile roof. I think that the register must contains all original T1 Westfalia Campers with dormobile roof. Which informations do we need for a register car? Owner, location, year, body number, westfalia interieur type, interieur number, and of course a picture :?:

Now that I know that the old bucket I just hauled out of a junk yard is an SO-44 Dormobile, I'm going to need to find parts for it to get it back to specifications. Again, I will take pics of the bus when I go back to my strorage in a couple of weeks and post them in this thread. It's a rough old bus, so don't laugh too hard when you see the pictures.:wink: The poptop needs new vent-doors and skylight windows, the striped plastic pop top canvas and a new seal. The interior lacks a good closet, icebox etc...I need to see some pictures of an intact interior to know what's missing or rotten in mine. The body is very straight and the belly pans aren't too bad either, however, the floors are pretty bad as well as the lower part of the metal partician. It needs extensive rust repair on the inside, but the outside isn't that bad.

After checking out this thread, I now know it's an SO-44, at least I'm pretty darn sure. I am not extremely knowledgeable about the interior types that were installed in old Westfalias, but I'm learning some. I'm more into Deluxe buses and panel vans.

If one you guys could post some pictures of the interior of your bus, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

The bay window buses with the full width bed were SO-69s. There were several versions of the SO-69, actually. Search "so-69" in the gallery for pics. Some even came with the same plaid used in the flip-seats. I've seen both the orangey and the green/blue, depending on bus colour.

Two different coments on my post. :oops:

The full width bed is indeed the koolest BUT the fatchick dormy where my top came from did have a regular width bed with the side closet. When I said the same set up, I meant the front set up behind the bench seat: icebox-stove-closet combo. 8)

Unfortunately, the whole interior was sold separately to another person and with that went the "tag" with the # on it! :?

Yes.

There is one so-44 known in the Netherlands. It has no Dormobile roof.
I'ts owned by a friend of mine.

Some pictures:

The bus below, which has a Belgian licence place seems to have a SO-44 parts. I never seen this bus in person.
