Hi guys! This is my first post on this board. Anyway, I was wondering if it would be possible to put a 5 speed tranny into a late 70's model transporter. I'm thinking that there's so reason why there aren't any in the late buses. Comments much appreciated.

5 speeds are longer. The torsion tubes do not lend themselves to modification. It is a difficult undertaking to get the engine to fit further back in the chassis to allow a 5 speed. Once you somehow managed to do this, the engine would need modification to accept the taller gear, i.e. modified for greater torque. A stock engine with a taller gear would give you lousy fuel mileage as it tried to overcome the considerable aerodynamic load off the horsepower peak.
VW engineers did a pretty good job with that noisy 4,200 rpm/77 mph cruising speed with the 2.0.

Check out Gene Berg Enterprises, they have been selling 5 speed kits for bugs and type 3's for years. I believe they also sell kits for busses. Lots of $$$ though. |
