  View original topic: Setting float level on Weber IDA carbs. Page: 1, 2  Next

I have done a search on the forum but i cant find any topics on how to set them, the topics/sticky seems to be for everything but IDAs.
Can anyone let me know what the basic set up is or point me towards a link please.
The carbs are new.

You can buy the Berg tool for setting the float level, or, if you know someone that has a set of IDA's with the correct float level, you can use a small rod to check the float level through the inspection port on top of the carb. It's about 1/16" diameter hole in the top of the carb. I can't remember the measurement of what it is supposed to be with this method.

Im still not getting it how do you use the tool I made one according to the weber manuel but dont get it .how do you know it is hitting the needle valve and when it is open and closed?

The aircooled tech section is good but it doesnt show you how to measure and what it should be.
Plus i dont have a berg tool and cant get them this side of the pond.
I looked in the weber tech manual and that has no sign of how to or what measurment.
I have a set of vernier calipers to measure with.
Is there anyone who could walk me through this.
I know you set them 5.5 -6 mm but where/how????
Any help appreciated. :wink:

Refer to the pic in the ACN article about 2/3 down the page showing the use of the tool against the float. What you can't see is in the background, there's another tool that sets the distance from the carb top to the tab on the float that actuates the inlet valve. With that distance set, the float should sit above the carb top by 5.5-6mm. I will try to remember to get a better pic of what the tools are like.

Thanks for the link but thats for idfs mine are idas and the float is secured in the base of the carb not on the top piece so different to measure???

Here are the tools I made:



The tool on the left is used to set the distance from the carb top to the tip of the inlet valve like this:



The distance is set by changing the thickness of the gasket between the valve and the carb top. Spec is 25.0mm.

The tool at the far right of the top pic is used to set the distance from the float's tab to the carb top. Although my tool looks adjustable, it is only adjustable to get the setting according to Weber's spec, 24.2mm. Here it is installed:



Then when the carb is turned upside down, the float "rises" to touch the tool like this:



Finally, the last tool is used to measure how much above the carb top the float rises to:



Note the slot machined in it. This is to clear the seam of the float. The tool has this machining on both sides, one is machined so the step is 5.5mm, the other is 6.0mm. The spec is to have the 5.5 touch the float, and have a gap for the 6.0 side.

Thanks,Bruce .That is exactly what I needed.Those tools are nice and the pics and instuctions were AWESOME! The float depth tool that they dont show in the manuel is what was stumping me.

Wow - I have done IDFs a few times, but I need to do the IDAs on the'vert here very soon.

I don't have any of those tools - and didn't think beforehand about hte float not being on the carb top but in the body.

Always something . . . .

You set them without the gasket.

Two points for guessing how thick the gasket is supposed to be:

Heres a good link. I use a micrometer and from the tab that hits the ball should be .200" This is how Jaycee showed me. Its hard to explain but you might figure it out. You can use a micrometer to measure the other way as well.

With the tools in the pics above, I also made the float spring. Never use it though. I just hang the carb upside-down and measure the 5.5-6mm float height.

I'm finally checking my new 48s, an old redline kit I bought years ago (unused). The floats are very high out of the box (kinda expected that). When I invert the carb body and use the tool to see how far the float goes up (to the 5.5 spec) I also find that the float will go NO LOWER than that point. I cannot find any spec on the float drop for the 48 IDA. A few references to checking the rise and drop, but no spec of the actual drop.

In other words, when I adjust the tang on the float so that it only rises 5.5 above the body, it will essentially become stationary - there is no drop from that point. I see the other tang for adjusting float drop, but no idea how far to take it?
