Sorry about the troubles on your trip, but THANKS for making it to Bullibrigade!!!
You'll immediately notice the difference between Bugjam and Bullibrigade, in that when you rolled into Bugjam, you were ignored and abused, and at Bullibrigade, you were escorted right up front and center to the primo show spot in front of the General Store where that beauty of a time capsule bus belonged!
I was volunteered into directing the parking at the Bullibrigade, and it was a pleasure to get you up there alongside the Capital Pub bus.
Those logos are simply amazing to see in person.

Your exactly right JP :D The two shows were just worlds apart. Not just in cars but in attitude as well. Bug Jam is commercialism and bureaucracy whereas Bulli was a real sense of community. Our experiences at Bulli made every setback worth while. Bulli and all you guys helping out with it are top notch!

Hey Chad glad you guys made it sorry about the troubles down in B'ham. Wish I would have known about your probs I have a few VW friends in the B'ham and Montgomery area as I grew up around there?
Glad you got to experiance Bulli Brigade I want to try and make it back there one day

Re: big nut mountain gears, there is an M-code for mountain gears. M92 Big nut mountain gears have the same gearing as the little nuts (1.39). (I heard that most Swiss or Italian big nut buses came with mountain gearing, and 1.26 stub axles are hard to find there). I have never run into a set of these, apart from an NOS pair of stub axles that someone picked up in Germany.
As always, no guarantees that that's the og tranny in there.

One way to tell would be to take a wheel off, undo the RGB fill plug, and count the teeth on the upper gear . You'ld have to mark a tooth (sharpie? liquid paper?), and slowly turn the wheel and count the teeth. Might be tricky, but I heard it can be done.

1.26 RGs have 24 teeth on the stub axle and 19 on the upper gear (24/19=1.26)
1.39 RGs have 25 teeth on the stub axle and 18 on the upper gear (25/18=1.39)

There is also a link in my sig for a method to find out your gearing w/o taking things apart.

Clara, wish i had been able to meet you in person at Bulli. Just seems like there was so much to see and so little time.

I plan on using your gearing calculator link to check out the gearing as soon as the weather breaks.

Clara, Had the bus up in the iack today so i pulled a wheel and the RGB filler nut. Cleaned one tooth then marked it with a sharpie. Counted them three times and came up with 19 Teeth each time.

So i have regular big nut RGBs but the engine turns about 10.5 times per wheel revolution, so according to your gearing calculator i have 4:375 R&P. Isnt a std. R&P a 4:12? Can this be right?

So, how did you get the 10.5 rev. figure?
I am assuming this is fourth gear.
Did you put it in fourth on jackstands and turn over the engine manually?
This is of great interest to me for figuring out the gearing on my kombi.

To tell the truth I have never used that technique, I found the link somewhere, and know the guy who did the math and believe that yes he knows how to do the math.

I am not exactly sure when a 4.12 or a 4.375 was used, have some conflicting info there, and usually find the trans isn't original to the bus anyway. Both are stock split bus tunnel case r/ps. Yes, it is entirely possible that Kong has a 4.375. My red bus has a 4.375 r/p. The '56 Westy feels like it has the exact same gearing as red bus, and I expect it has a 4.375 as well. The '56 has a trans with the one ton little nuts, and I believe that is the original gearing for the one ton '63 the trans came from. Both those buses have 15" rims with 205 75 R 15 tires.

I will shortly use that method to see what the gearing is in the new bad ass bus. I can report back on how that works for me, if there is interest.

look in the bus hunting thread. Matt black 66 kombi with hacked wheel wells, flares, Krager wheels and a mean raked look. lol. It's bad ass.

If it has a FF flyer the trans is going to a friend

Its been almost a year, so we thought we'd take the opportunity to re-visit the park after last weekend's Eureka Springs show.

Eureka was awesome as usual but very wet this year. I was glad i brought my single too. It was way better than sitting inside a fogged up bus.

Alot of people were glad we "found" such a nice table and umbrella too. Thanks denis.

The rain passed and we enjoyed the show on Saturday. We also enjoyed alot of stories about people who remembered the bus. Several stories about people who tried to buy the bus and even one story about jacking parts off it! :wink:

We headed out for The Land of Kong Sunday morning to revisit the park. The first thing we noticed was a new sign out front.

We found the "Until further notice" part especially interesting. Could it be re-opening soon? Id love to be able to drive through the park.

There were some grounds people riding around on ATVs making it incredibly difficult to tresspass but we did manage to get it backed into the spot where it sat for over 20 years, then snapped a few more pictures outside the gate.

Then we enjoyed a nice SLOW trip home. I still havent swapped out those rediculously low gears but i hope to replace them with a normal big nut, replace all the window seals and have a new camping interior built for the next show season.

That is the best bus story ever. Dinosaur busses rule. you should re- open the park, so you have a dinosaur park to match your bus. I just read through the whole thing today. I once decided, right before a trip, to add an extra gas cap seal on top of the existing seal to keep gas from spilling when i filled up. No gas smell. it took me 8 hrs to get from LA to Ventura. Until i realised the gas cap was the problem. That is a hard one to diagnose when you dont suspect the gas cap.
