I want to take the air cleaners off at the strip for more power. Does anyone make screens that fit over the stacks?

RIS Tue Nov 13, 2007 2:04 pm

They're available, but if you're just pulling the filters off at the track you should be safe. I think worst case scenario you could break the belt and ingest a piece into the engine, pull the belt and that's not an issue anymore... :D

I run my IDA's open all the time, after 10k i pulled the engine down and there was zero scoring on the cylinders, still had great crosshatch to boot. i don't drive on dirt roads or anything though...

Thanks, I just nervous about sucking in a rock. Any idea who sells the screens?

miniman82 Tue Nov 13, 2007 2:39 pm

I read in David Visard's book that the screens actually decrease flow, so you'd be better off sticking to filters, or no filters. Not to mention, the only thing those screens will stop is a rock getting sucked in...

Okay, the whole point is to increase HP, not decrease it. I'll try one run without the air cleaners and see if there is a noticable difference. Thanks

I seen a few of those scrrens for sale at swaps, used, and they are almost always missing the filtering mesh. It either deteriorates and gets sucked in or just gets sucked into the engine.

If you only want to keep big crap out you can cut some squares of house window screen and rubber band it around the velocity stacks. Shouldn't really restrict flow either...

Ellis...might have missed it but what kinda carbs are you running? RIS, the ones that are missing are probably more from small backfires which torch um. I know a guy who makes them and has since changed the sceen to SS screen.

Cool, however it happens it makes them a waste of $$$ to me.

I've seen these on eBay for a while, anyone try 'em?

Yeah, check my gallery. My engine pic shows them on. I'm still in the process of tuning my carbs (as you can see) but I drove them around all day and didn't notice a difference from before when they weren't on. But like I said, I'm still breaking in the motor and haven't really nailed it yet. I'll do a SOTP test later and let you know. They are nice though and keeps the paranoia cloud away.

They do decrease performance... but they look C   L

I'm running Dell 48s. Guess I need to measure the stacks to make sure I order the right screens. Those stainless steel screens on ebay sure do look cool.

Cool has nothing to do with it, its all about piece of mind. I aint racing it so i could care less if I lose a couple ponies. So it will run a little rich, I'll adjust for it. I guarrantee they flow better than the filters he's running now. I ran my 64 back in the 80s with them open all the time as a daily driver and everything was fine. But if you want them for use at the track, I'd do like RIS said and just run um open when your there.

Redline sells filter/screens.

Glenn Thu Nov 15, 2007 4:29 am

I'm using a set of filters from Uni Fiilters Aircooled.net and see no improvement with them removed.

They flow like crazy.

Ellis' Bug Thu Nov 15, 2007 2:31 pm

Thanks Glen, I'll probably go with what you have. Looks pretty good too!

57 Rag Thu Nov 15, 2007 2:33 pm

Glenn, your telling me that the these screens I have below decrease performance but those don't??

Oh yeah and by the way, they do look C :D :D L

Glenn Thu Nov 15, 2007 2:51 pm

My understanding is that the carbs actually atomize some of the fuel above the top of the velocity stacks and the screens disrupt that process. It's not that air filters restrict the air flow.

Ant the Uni Filters have wire springs inside to prevent the foam from collapsing an interfering with the process.

vwsandfreek Thu Nov 15, 2007 4:18 pm

Here is a theory as It has been described to me, anyone correct me if I get it wrong though. The wire mesh that close to the velocity stacks caused "ventilation" or "cavitation" which is a disruption of the shape and consistancy of the airflow. Much like putting a wire mesh around a boat propeller to "try and protect it from debris" that affect actually causes it to disrupt the waterflow and thus decrease performance. Does that make sense at all???
