Regardless, it's great to see it happening and even better to be able to follow the progress. Definitely along the order of some of the barndoor restorations that have happened in the UK.

Awesome. I think it's great that Tim & Gerson are bringing this one back. It will show that anything can be saved given enough resources.

Have you considered contacting the guy in Thailand who was restamping M-code & VIN plates?

Not to hi-jack but...I hadn't found anything on the Thailand guy. I found a guy in Poland that was remaking the plates but was looking for another. Do you have further. My airbox VIN plate got got, and I was looking for a replacement. Thanks.

Project Update......as it stands right now, as of today, this project is coming to a screetching halt!!!! :( :( :( .....yesterday I found out that this bus does not have a VIN plate either...so in essence, I have a 59D/C with no M code plate, and no VIN plate, that to me is a no no :x :x :x ...a M code plate I can live without, but a VIN plate is a must.......in retrospect, it was my fault for not asking the previous owner, from the very begining if the vehicle had a VIN plate or not....   I will now have to have the yelow 59D/C that is located in Vancouver, and that is for sale, shipped to Tim in New York to continue with this project....http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/album_page.php?pic_id=548805

this will set us back at least 3 weeks, but at least that bus does have a VIN plate, I will have to verify if it has a M code plate, I will have someone go over and take a good look at it tomorrow.....more to follow....

There was Filip from poland, that was making repro VIN tags. he would make a tag if you had proper documentation( ie, title, paperwork)

I agree. In my opinion abandoning this project sends a bad message to your potential customers. If everything should be saved, you need to practice what you preach!!!

Knock out some replacement VIN & M-code plates, and keep moving forward with it.

Greg, unfortunately I have to think like a business person...I am not going to dump $30,000 into a bus whose resale value will be severely diminished because it does not have 2 very important items..I.E. an M code plate, and most important of all, a VIN plate......this is not about not wanting to save a bus because it's too rusty, at the end of the day, unfortunately, it also comes down to how wisely you spend your money...I do not know about you, but to me $30,000U.S. is a SHITLOAD of money...

Even here in California (where everything is illegal) the Department
of Motor Vehicles will re-issue a VIN number to a vehicle that doesn't
have one and give you a plate to attach to the vehicle to make it legal again...
I do understand your point in an investment perspective, though.

Quote: The VIN is the number by which the vehicle is registered. The numbers are assigned by DMV or CHP (from DMV referral) for motor vehicles when the motor or other identifying number is removed, destroyed, or obliterated.
