View original topic: Where to install an oil temp. sender?

I figure there must be alot of knowledge out there on the optimum location for an oil temperature sender? I'll be installing an oil temp. gauge in my 1963 Beetle and wanted some advice on the best location for the sender on a 1200cc stock beetle engine. Any advice?

Thanks.
Robert

The BEST place to put it is to remove the plug at the intake to the pump on the case. That is the one directly to the right of the oil pump. Tap it and install the sensor there. That would give you the most accurate temperature indication.

That depends on what about the temperture of the oil you'd like to monitor. Putting the sender in an oil gallery will yield slightly different temp readings than one mounted in the sump. If you want to know the temp of the oil going to the engine, put it in the gallery. If you want to know the temp of the oil after it's used by the engine, put it in the sump.

i installed mine below the pump...

it replaces the large "screw" plug for the pressure relief.

Thanks for all the input but, I'm with superbtl...if someone can post a pic of their temp. sender location it would be helpful. Quote: can somone post a pic of good places to install oil temp sender. I've figured that next to the oil pump (right side) is the optimal location....but does that plug unscrew and if so, I've read that it should be tapped out...what size threads does the plug have? If its a relief plug then is there a spring inside? and how do I install the sensor if there is? alot of questions huh? I currently dont have a temp. guage on my beetle so i jus want to be sure i do it right the first time.

thanks.

Ill post a photo tomorrow. All the good locations for a oil temp sender must be tapped except for the original oil pressure sender location. The oil pressure control valve hole is not a good location for a oil temp sender. It gets no oil flow from anywhere except thru a 5mm hole in the case. The oil that would enter there would be very hot from the #1 and # 2 main bearings.

a guy told me once, if you have a universal case that has a hole for a type 3 for its long dipstick insert... if its in a bug.. theres a block off plate.. he said drill and tap the plate for a temp.

Yes, but he has a type one case.

In this photo to the right of the oil pump, you can see a plug. This is the inlet to your oil pump. Best location for sender.

In this photo, You can see that instead of a plug, there is a screwed in insert. This type is much eaisier. But it is an industrial motor case..

In This photo you can see the type 3 fill tube adapter. It is Black in the center of the photo. This is a 2332 with 85,000 miles on it in 4 years and still runs great. Never even used an external oil cooler.

do you know what size plug that is? unfortunately I have an 1/8' NPT sender and its probably obvious that the threads are metric....any suggestions on where to get the right bushing to transition from the, in question metric thread to an 1/8' NPT? I gotta say...thanks again for the pics...alot of help! :D
