Good info here on Flange crank build. MM is the Man!

Thanks jbbugs, that is a well documented build. MM has it going on.

I too am going to use a Auto Lina Al case. I will be doing some close checking.

The flanged crank seems like a lot of extra work, but once I am done, I will not look back over my sholder and wonder if it will hold for one more pass.

Wedgemate - everytime you remove the flywheel, some of the taper lock is lost - just an FYI.

Flanged cranks - The bugpacks are in short supply but they are getting ready to re-release them. SCAT is no longer making them.
Moldex just raised their prices another $500.00 per crank and minimum lead time is three months. The Moldex is now over $2,100.00 just for the crank.

Absolutely right on that one, Marty. A good portion of wedges out there are just machined-finish surfaces. They will install but will gall everytime they are mated together and unmated.

But I will say that if the surfaces are grind-finish, you will not see the galling hardly. It is a little more extra work to set up for grinding on the lathe, but it is worth it in the long run.

Rough cut with cutters and finish up with grinding. The tapers come out beautiful. The runout is also improved.

update on bugpack crank;did more research(what other guys have done/gotten away with)put bolts in lathe and sliced .050 off the tops(couldn't bear to put that beautiful flywheel on the milling machine)....this gets it to the point where the driven disc contacts the flywheel...now i will set up the disc on an old input shaft in the lathe and gently shave a few thou off the very fat rivets...this will give me some clearance to allow for wear;when it's all together this thing should be almost impossible for my son to break, though he will try....when i eventually stop driving it and give it to him,i know it will end up with a turbo and anything else he can hang on it...hopefully the auto linea case and overkill innards will prove to be worth the extra work.....and i will probably beat the crap out of it too....mike

Yes - allways clearance the bolts. SCAT sells them already done - FYI.

Your weak spot is that case. When he puts the turbo on it and starts turning up the boost, it is going to crack all up.
