Just curious how many DIY greenies are here? Do you frequent any forums geared towards green living?

The Martian Shop

We have just received a new board posting from deep space!
The Martian Vanagons have come to meet the human race!

I got into my Vanagon, drove to the Martian shop!
I saw the 'Open' sign was on, so then I made a stop.
I opened up the sliding door and stepped out to the ground...
And saw the Martians on the floor all dancing to this sound!

Bill Bixby and his Uncle Ray soon fixed all my CV's...
And levitated up the van with such apparent ease...
And Mr. Bradbury was there, and Schwarzeneggar too...
There was no Vanagon repair those Martians couldn't do...

But then a bunch of Eurovans all drove up on the run...
Their repairs would cost thousands more, so much for all my fun!
So I got back into my van and drove off back around...
And even though I'm stuck on Earth, I still can hear that sound...

I think the answer is ALL OF US....

we use a lot of GREEN bucks to fix our VW van..

Everybody wants to be green, but what does it have to do with vanagons?
Unless it's being pulled by a horse, it isn't very green.

As long as your van is used in NON-procreative mating, this would be green. Controlling population is the greenest thing you can do. Lord know, I'm all for non-procreative mating. Being green is all in attitude.

Why do you think horses are green? How are horses greener than running on biodiesel made from waste vegetable oil?

you know thats why people developed cars originally was due to the pollution from horses in the cities.

getting greener.
I just changed careers to lead a green building practice for a real estate investment group here in SF.

But am I green? That's hard to quantify:
Do I buy carbon offsets for my own emmissions...no
Do I try to use public transportation...yes
Do recycle everything I can...pretty much
Am I careful to conserve water and energy...yes
Am I a vegetarian...no
Am I only buying "sustainable" products...no
Will the first house I build be made from strawbale...yes
Do I use xeriscaping...yes
Am I willing to trade my vanagon for a prius...nope
Is there really some floating islands of plastic trash that cover hundreds of square miles and are 30 feet deep in the center of the pacific ocean...yes (the pacific gyre)
Do I think water is the next oil...no, but it might get ugly in the 40 years.
Do I think climate change is manageable...no, but what the heck else are we going to do?

I try to be whenever possible, but I have to admit that the beloved van is probably my biggest smudge on old mother nature...
whenever I hear a vanagon go by and comment to my GF about how much I love the sound of the rumbly boxer, she replies with, "It sounds like pollution".
Emissions aside, 16 mpg isn't the greenest thing either...I'm secretly hoping to throw a rod so I can do some sort of uber green conversion and run it off of potatoes and coathangers or something :shock:

ooh, or even better...

I wonder if Doc Brown has any spare Mr. Fusions laying around.....

It takes energy to make biodiesel, energy was used to produce the vegtable oil, and energy was used to make the vegtable oil waste, most of it from burning coal. then on top of it your burning the biodiesel.

Huh??? I don't believe that was Henry Ford's driving force in his auto....

Now perhaps some of the other auto manufacturers had this "horse crap" in mind...

Do you have any backing to this? I'm interested in learning if this was the real deal behind the auto industry.

I don't think so, either. No more so than it influenced the Wright brothers to bring their project along.
No, these guys were sorta hobbyists driven by passion for acceptance. Only later did the capitaism drive take effect. Though Henry was one of the most far thinking (come would say conniving) in that regard.
Keep in mind that both in Europe and the US there was already a very functional mass transit system in place. (one could virtually go any place in the lower 48 in about 4 days in relative comfort.)
The first 20 years of automobiling, cars were just TOYS. Rich men's toys for sure. Motoring was motor sport. No one would have been so foolish as to rely on them to drive to work, unless you had a chauffeur.
(An interesting GREEN sidebar: Has anybody seen the very neat water turbine powered generator at Henry Ford's residence, Fairlane? I guess Henry didn't like the idea of being beholden to the power company?
Did Henry have a ten-cent-life? )
