Alan Willis wrote: You sure? I see a 12volt genny and blue coil :-k
Look again... it's a 6 volt generator. And are you saying the blue coil was never offered in 6v?
Here's my NOS Screamer kit with a 6 volt blue coil.
The car is a European model, from Austria (hence the A), with the older style front bumpers, 6 volts and a 1300. You can still see the 1300 script on the decklid.
I've had many discussions with John about problems he's having with a old school Tiger 6 volt CDI. He's too hard core to switch to 12v. |

So he must of added the chrome trim recently
Glenn, get a copy of the February 1975 issue of HotVW's(the year and month I was born) and check out the original requirements for a Cal-look beetle was
BTW,back then,Beecher had the car restored but slightly lowered in the front and with a much smaller engine;same as Bill Schwimmer
Bill's amazing '59 euro rag used to have an all stock dash and a 1641cc engine. Over the years he has redone the dash, changed engines a few times, and recently installed a Berg-5.
Neither of their cars were originally built to be Cal-look;they evolved into it.
Another true example of a real Cal-look Beetle is Lee Gong's '65 Beetle... |

Glenn,look VERY CAREFULLY at the generator;its 12v.
As for arguing about what is correct and what isn't; I literally grew up with the scene;I've seen all the changes, and I don't consider the new version of a Cal-look VW correct, but since very few people do it right anymore, and everyone claims their car is 'the look' what are you going to do? |

Its not what I read, its what I know.
When I saw Cal-look VW's cruising the streets in the late 80's they still followed the original look.
In the mid 90's billet crap hit the scene, then disappeared.
now its all about the 'resto-cal'
But true cal-look VW's are still around.
I like true cal-look vw's. The new versions are ok,but to see a dechromed beetle with one piece windows, smotth dash with engine monitering guages, and a big IDA engine with wild cam,and those evil looking T-bars,it gets my blood flowing 8) |

Alan... it's 6 volts.
You are wrong... I know the car and I know the owner.
Download the picture and enlarge it. You'll see the sticker on the coil says 6 Volts. |

So he's osing a 6v coil with a 12v genny?
I can't get the pic to go any bigger,just going by what I see,and that is a 12v generator not a 6v.
Maybe someone else can blow the pic up big enough to be sure...? |

Alan, I hate to admit it, but you are not wrong... and not right.
I sent John a email and he's his reply:
John Plow wrote: Yep, you're correct - it is a one-year-only, European-only issue generator. They used 12v bodies with 6 volt windings, which makes sense because they didn't want to manufacture 2 different bodies for one year. Although for some odd reason, they didn't mind making 6 and 12v cars in one year! The generator even has stamped into it, "6v".
The other rare thing is the regulator under the seat, identical to a 12v but with 6v components. Because they are so rare, I was lucky enough to find one of each in Europe for spares. '67 is such a bastard year.
You wouldn't believe how many people have walked up to me over the years at car shows and pointed out how many things are "wrong" on my car ;-)
So... i'm right and you're not wrong. (too funny) |

Maybe with old school EMPI gauges, but Autometer?
And dump that "Oh O nine" for a Boach 010 or Vertex magneto.
Either way... i'd a sweet car, so don't get me wrong. |

They work great on smaller mild engines. The 010 is better on larger engine with bigger cams and valves. |

Here is what I have on the shelf, let me know what you think:
78.4mm crank
90.5mm P+C's
FK-7
1.4's
1 5/8" Bugpack exhaust
043 heads with mild port+polish
IDA's(of course) with 37mm vents and third progression
This is going in my daily driver '59 euro rag
The only reason i want to try out the 019 is because it was in the 40 horse my car came with. |

Yep... 019 will be nice.
I'm building a 1776, FK-7, 1.4 and 40x35 heads and will use a 019. it's for a friend. |
