Hello-
Are there any good engine software packages that would be useful to an air cooled owner? I know I could just copy what everyone else does, but I would feel more confident if I actually understood how changing 'X' would impact 'Y' and 'Z'.
Thanks,

Many use Desktop Dyno. |

I know how everyone complains about never searching, so I figured I'd try, and bring this back from the dead.
Who has successfully used some sort of laptop engine dyno software with an Aircooled VW? I can't seem to get Dub Dyno to load on either my iPhone or laptop. Is Desktop Dyno still a viable program? What else is available? Not necessarily looking for something free, but something basic that I don't have to pay $1000+ for. |

Pipemax is probably one of the more accurate, and least expensive.
Every simulator is based on ACCURATE head flow data from YOUR heads on a real flow bench.
Garbage info in, garbage info out....

What type of info do they look for? Simple CFM at lift, or does it require port volume/velocity, and carb/throttle body flow numbers? |

The butt dyno is free! But if you're super hard up on cash and can't afford a $1000 computer program you could always go to a real dyno for a mere $150 US dollars. |

The DubDyno app is pretty neat, and cheap. Its fun to play around with and see what kind of a difference different mods make on combos. |

When you have a friend with his own personal Mustang Chassis Dyno in the garage behind his house, and access to an engine dyno of a shop that has built the engine of a past Hot Rod Drag Week Unlimited Class Winner within 3 miles of your house, dynoing the final product isn't the issue. Spending the tens of thousands of dollars, and years of time physically creating 5-6 variations of 5-6 different engines simply to see what effect a cam, or compression change has is an issue. A friend building a land speed racer has had temporary access to a very expensive program to help design their engine. Something as simple as playing with lobe separation angles from 103 to 118 degrees on the same cam had very interesting effects. Working at an Aircooled VW shop for 10 years, I got to experience hundreds of engine combos, whether they were built in the shop, or outside the shop by the customer, or by another shop. I've been down the road of the monkey see, monkey do world of W100, and FK8 cams, and quite a few examples were painfully mediocre. |

If you don't mind getting into the grunt of calculations there's some intense Excel spreadsheets out there that will do everything you can imagine. I would check YouTube first because they will explain how to use it. |

When was the last time you downloaded it? The last links I found were a few years old, and wouldn't download. Anyone have any download links for an iPhone 4S, or a PC based laptop?

Have any links? |

I have no idea if it is a good link, but it says it's for iPhone.
I prefer Android before overpriced thrash, so I never tried it. ;) |

If you think you can safely download a payed android app for free from a website think again. It's an easy way for hackers to gain backdoor access... |

While most would agree this Dub Dyno is a neat gimmick/game, from my understanding, that's about all it is. It would have been cool to check out, but the above link is almost 3 years old. Lets see if we can move back on the topic of actual engine simulation software for all engines, that people have had success with designing Aircooled VW engines, and leave the phone bashing out? |

While Dub Dyno is not a scientific instrument, it helps getting a basic understanding about relationships between different parts.
It can be downloaded right now. If you have an Android phone or tablet. |

You can download a free trial of Lotus, one cylinder only, see halfway down oage.
http://www.lotuscars.com/engineering/engineering-software
If you have IR carbs, then....one cylinder is good for everything but the header, which, unless you want to build headers then you don't need.
The head input is "flow coefficient" by seat ID, which translates somewhat easily from flow testing. If you do not have or plan to make a flowbench you still should learn the basics of how that works. If you use it as a video game you still need to know what the parameters mean.
If you want to actually use it then you will need actual data. Have to actually measure the ports and cam. |
