The master admiring his art? [;-)

Actually, I will have a couple inches of droop, because of the notch in the spring plates. I (mostly) finished up my welding cart last night, so I'm going to fab the caliper mounts and brake line tabs tonight, and hopefully get some paint on em. Thanks again!!

Check out the new double one-piece hood feature. It is like a tear off. If it gets too muddy I pull the ejection lever and it flies off revealing the clean hood below.

neanders Wed Mar 03, 2010 7:10 am

But what do you do when the new hood gets dirty? At some point I'm gonna convert to a one-piece front end, albeit a bug-eye one from Mark V. Before I can do that, though, I hafta get rid of my back seat so I have a place for a fuel cell. It never ends...

Crash Johnson Wed Mar 03, 2010 8:53 am

Just put it under the one-piece. I had mine up there until recently and it worked just fine. I had a 12 gallon round then put a 12 gallon rectangular cell up there. In either case I had a hole cut in the front end for filling.

But I need a place to store my spare, so I was thinking of relocating the gas tank so I can put the spare up front. Guess I should see if it even fits, eh?

hey Neil, those arms look great. Matt and I haven't been able to work on the bugs lately because I had a heart attack on the 23rd of feb. Can you believe it?? I'm 39 !!!!! It was caused from a blood vessel spasming on the bottom of my heart. So, I'm back in the "recovery phase" of my military career. now with all that is wrong with me the army may kick me to the curb after 17 yrs. :-k oh well that will mean I get paid now instead of finishing my 20 yrs and retireing. any way we are going to first take some pics of both bugs. then start breaking bolts loose. I thought it might be better and faster to pull them both out onto my concrete pad with some space between them and have a couple more guys come over and just pick up the bodies and swap them. oh by the way... I'm thinking you are into this bug pretty close to your truck   . did you get a horse trailer?? is that so you can smuggle the bug somewhere???

Build a roof rack and put your tire in that.

Finally got the new 2x3's finished and painted.

Hopefully they're going in tomorrow.

And here's what I found when I looked up under the car.

Guess I dodged a bullet, eh??

andychrist77 Tue Apr 13, 2010 7:34 pm

 just in time. I have heard those don't like to stay in there.

Lotrat Tue Apr 13, 2010 9:49 pm

Wow! Glad you caught it. Now I don't feel so bad finding mine like this:

Okay, so here's a question that's been asked 100 times: I currently have a Lincoln Electric HD3200 wire feed 110v MIG setup that I've used successfully for most things on my bug. But, I've started getting into some stuff that requires more heat than the 110v can generate, so I am thinking of stepping up. I am thinking of a 220v MIG setup, since I'm already familiar with MIG welding, I have the tank, etc. I am looking for suggestions. Also, one of the fathers in my Scout troop is a welding instructor at the local community college, and every fall he does a 0 credit class on Arc, MIG and TIG for hobbyists like me. I think I'll sign up for that as well. Thanks in advance...

GhiaBateman Fri Apr 16, 2010 10:37 am

I'm looking at Hobart or Miller, gonna go 220V right off the bat since the Ghia will not be the only thing I ever build

Blowing the dust off this thread:

I finally got the new trailing arms installed, brakes bled, etc etc etc. The first pair of 2x3's were not fab'ed for my ride height, so they had a lot of camber:

So, I got Mark from BCR to build me another pair that restores the camber at my ride height:

I'm almost thinking I should have had him build in another degree or two of negative camber, so that they straighten up some as they unload.

chubby53 Thu May 27, 2010 6:03 pm

looks good

GhiaBateman Fri May 28, 2010 3:28 am

so neil, now that it's "done" what is your ride height (vs stock) and what are your final track widths front is wider than rear correct???

I ask because I plan to run same tire front and back and need to know how wide the beam will be. although your running ball joint... hmmm

neanders Fri May 28, 2010 6:12 am

I have just about 17.5 inches under the pan, and the track is 70 out back and 69.5 up front. My front end is 6in wider than stock, and I am running 7.00x15's on 4in BTR's up front, and 33x9.50's on 7in BTR's out back. The Tweeds spindles push the front wheels out about 1/2in on each side, and the rear discs push the wheels out about 1/2 as well.

looks good now before it looked like a swing axle.
I dont know how high I can get mine . Im going by SCORE class 5/1600 rules for my street and my race one.
I need more ground clearance my pan is taking a beating so far I have 14" on a BJ beam I going to link pin this summer.

your baja looks bad ass I cant wait to see it in action =D>

(I don't plan to do any jumping)

So did you jump it yet? Geez time flys...

neanders Fri May 28, 2010 2:40 pm

As soon as Brian gets his car back on the road, we'll head out to the local ORV park and see if we can get it airborne. I can get the front end airborne on speed bumps, does that count??? ;-)
